My countrymen and women I am just fed up with Aurther Somare and his ICT Policy. Why pushing it through when we the ordinary Papua New Guineans are benefiting from Digicel's Service? Though it is a foreign company, it is serving the needs of PNG at an afforfable rate.
Telekom generates millions for the country. That is what young Somare says. Yeh...this millions ends up in the pocket of a few like himself. The rest of us suffer.
He wants to keep us in the stone age while only his children, family and himself would benefit from expensive communication services.
Remember he was not like us educated in community schools, high schools and universities in PNG, he was a spoiled brat educated overseass with PNG tax payers money and running aroung with cell phones in sports cars.
Shame on him!

If Arthur Somare was really concerned about telecommunications in PNG he should be looking at privatisation as most in the west are doing, and open the doors to all international competitors just look at USA, Europe, Australia and even Asia and all the service providers they have.
The PNG Government would stand to make a substantial amount of money through semi or full privatisation. And not to just jump into bed with any service provider who would line minister’s pockets but one who would look to take PNG into the future.
Not only would this improve telecommunications in the Country but it would also provide more jobs in the industry.
And yes you are quite right about the Somare education background, if the system of community schools is good enough for you and me why is not good enough for the children of prominent politicians.
I guess they realise that the education curriculum in PNG is not good enough, and if that’s the case why do they send their children overseas, they should be looking to improve our education system at home for all to benefit, it really is a slap in the face for voters in general.

| Telikom needs to sort out problems then interconnect | February 12 2008, 1:51 PM |
THERE are many problems encountered with the government owned telecommunication company and they tell us they are ready to interconnect.
Surely the government can see this is not possible as they themselves have experienced the use of their mobiles that came with congested problems, high cost of phones, hook up charges, simcards and to top it all up, Telikom’s very own integrated poor quality service inherited since the era of Digital whatever with the usual message…. “The number you are calling is either switched off or outside the network coverage area.”
Until they correct these and other grave matters of concern, I do not envisage a true meaning of competitive communication through interconnectivity.
Let me tell you that even Telikom employees and families are using Digicel because it answers all of the above problems that our very own government/communication company has delivered to us….we should be ashamed of this and make suitable arrangements where the people of PNG can benefit fully instead of the top brass fighting it out with technical words and connotations that none of our village people or anyone will understand when they take away Digicel’s rights to operating freely here.
The last seven (7) months or so when Digicel came in I could be seeing standing or sitting in my house calling my family at home to bring bananas, betelnut, fish and talk to them in my own language clearly with no third party involved to bring my messages home. This direct contact with clarity and effective communication network cannot be matched by our very own telephone company which has not reached my area yet, although I live only 100kms out of Port Moresby.
Please think twice about interconnectivity because we will definitely not enjoy any of what Digicel has set up and rolled out after this eventuates. If Digicel is forced to stop using its own International gateway, then one can bet that all services will be stagnant again. The competitor will be gagged and there’s no telling what they will do.
I do not want an increase in fees and definitely it will mean no mobile phones because it will be too costly to own. It will be like all other goods and services that have taken a price hike now and we are left struggling to make ends meet, Dig deep into our pockets to pay for all the inherited costs supplied to us by our leaders and their instigators in C.O.D. packages.
I suggest PNG Telikom and the government to renegotiate the arrangements with Digicel and let Digicel handle its own equipment to the link up of their network with ours as they have done with other countries before coming to PNG. Some agreement on both parties can be sorted whilst other matters like the services we already are getting and are used to it now should be the prerogative of the competitor.
I guess we can sell it “a affair trade deal” and close the chapter on communication and open up in other areas like air transportation where the whole of PNG again can benefit with the “wonders and works of competition”.
Once again, please PNG Telikom, ino taim yet long yumi bai pait long interconnectivity as we do not have the equipment, the technical knowhow and the expertise to handle this deal. We must work alongside the outsider to gain and enhance our own incompetences in order we learn and strengthen our position and also let the people enjoy what they have tasted already. Furthermore, if I may kindly request your marketing Dept to forget about advertising full pages and use the money to upgrade networking and train the Papua New Guinean technicians to be the best in the world as we are only a small country of six million. Also stop the imitations as they are not really you. You have never been there for us until Digicel came to our doorstep.
Just be proud that in the face of adversity and hardship you struggled to stay on and the competition has also done wonders for your purse so use this and try to live up to your motto “ALWAYS THERE”.
If there should be interconnectivity it should be on Digicel and yours and no on your own because they do not want to inherit your mess and bend blindly to your outrageous demands. Remember the controversy is watched not only by PNG but the International community too!
