The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is presenting "Generations Softball Classic" at George Ward Park on Saturday October 17th. The event is for kids, senior citizens, and every age group in between. The Classic will feature top softball teams going head to head for a worthy cause--support for geriatric education and training for the UAB Center for Aging.
This coming Saturday morning at 11 a.m., the event will begin with a tribute to Jerry Shurbet, a man who put fastpitch softball on the map in Birmingham and who was a supporter of the UAB Center for Aging and eventually a patient in the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care until his death from cancer in 2007. The event honors Shurbet for his passion for softball and his abiding support for the Center for Aging. The Generations Softball Classic will then feature two exhibition softball games, one between the UAB Blazers Softball team and the Jefferson State Lady Pioneers and another between two teams representing the Birmingham Vipers Fastpitch Organization, an organization founded by the honored Jerry Shurbet. The Classic wraps up with a free softball-skills clinic for girls ages 8-18 led by UAB Blazer Coach Marla Townsend and the UAB and Jefferson State coaching staffs.
There is alot of exiting things planned for the day to include a fun area for the children, Vendor area for local businesses, t-shirts, photo booth, a raffle with lots of great prizes for people of all ages. There will be displays set up to highlight the wonderful programs offered by the Center for Aging and The Geriatric Medicine Clinic. Physicians will be present to answer any questions you may have about the programs and research that is done. Please make plans to attend. Additional information can be found at
