GOODYEAR’S NEW "SECRET WEAPON"

By Phil Howell

c

A "secret weapon" was unleashed on the rocks of Moab during Easter Jeep Safari this year. North America’s largest tire company was keeping details of the new Wrangler off-road tire under wraps, while testing its capabilities on the rocks. We were able to help with some of that testing and can report that the "secret weapon" (the new tire’s designation hasn’t been released, yet) worked great in all traction situations and has a very strong, three-ply sidewall utilizing a patented, cut resistant compound.

Goodyear brought the development tire to the 33rd annual Easter Jeep Safari to test the new tire’s reinforced sidewalls and proprietary traction tread compound. Ron Wells, marketing manager for Goodyear light truck tires, said he was confident the new Wrangler would perform well on the rocks. "No doubt about it, this is an aggressive tire. It features a race-proven design, having won a Pro 2 Class CORR race last year. Moab will allow us to fine tune our most aggressive off road tire before its introduction."

The tire will replace the Wrangler MT, Goodyear’s famous mud tire introduced in 1988. The Wrangler MT provided great grip, but the new extreme four-wheeling that’s surfaced in the sport was hard on the old tire’s sidewall construction. The new Wrangler takes care of that problem nicely! Goodyear marketers and engineers came to Moab last year for rock crawling. They said they came away with a better understanding of the hard core four-wheeler and an earful on their tire needs. "We can’t afford to ignore the off road enthusiast segment, which is exhibiting similar growth to racing," Wells said. "We came away convinced that we need to intensify our efforts in this market. As in racing, the participants are very loyal to the products that work. They are committed to what they do. Off roading is a major opportunity for Goodyear. We need to evaluate how we can better serve these enthusiasts."

We can report that we tried (really hard) to puncture the new Wrangler’s sidewall. While we destroyed three of Goodyear’s wheels, the tires didn’t even show a mark! They also seemed to grip as well as the Super Swamper SSR radial, the current backcountry traction king. Quite a few tires in the marketplace have attained good straight-line traction. Lateral traction (sideways grip) is another story. The Wrangler MT of old had good lateral grip and kept you from sliding sideways off a cliff. The new Wrangler works even better – with only one tread lug gripping the edge of the rock, the new tire was able to stay on a ledge and pull us to the top.

We’re impressed with Goodyear’s new "secret weapon." If they offer the tire in sizes the hard-core four wheeler needs (35" and larger), other manufacturers will have to burn the midnight oil to catch up. At the time of this writing, only one tire compares – the Super Swamper SSR radial. By being compared to that fantastic tire, Goodyear has shown that it’s still in the game, and a force to be reckoned with!
