Incest on the rise in PNG
Close relatives such as fathers, uncles and cousins commit almost 75% of sexual offence cases against women reported to police in Papua New Guinea’s East New Britain province.
PACNEWS reported that Roland Funmat, officer in charge of the Sexual Offences Section at Kokopo Police Station, revealed this during an awareness program, “These people are trusted and respected and if they do that, who will the children trust?” questioned Mr Funmat.
The report said more than 300 students packed the hall to listen to Mr Funmat. Due to the increase in sexual offence cases, the officer said the problem should not be ignored, adding that there should be more awareness in schools and other institutions to help the children.
From January to November last year, a total of 63 sexual offences against young girls were reported to police and victims referred for medical attention. Mr Funmat said this was an increase from previous years.
“If someone touches you on a wrong part of your body, you must inform your friends, teacher or someone close to you, don’t keep it quiete,” Mr Funmat said.
He also informed the students of the new Sexual Offences and Crime Against Children Act, telling the students that the attitude of compensation should be discouraged because that does not benefit the victim.
He said the matter should be reported to the police so that the offender can be punished while the victim goes through counselling.

Ok. Now that you women have heard it, its time to take some action. Maski sindaun na larim ol displa kain pasin blo incest go on. Its not healthy. Don't be ignorant nor in denial. We have to help the victims of incest and the offenders by rehabilitation by way of counselling (as in, talking about it), punishment for the crime and making other people away that such issues as these are crippling our society.
And don't finger point at ENBP. I'm sure incest is on the rise in other parts of PNG as well. So let's all work together to get these people back in line.

I believe incest occurs because those in very responsible positions and higher status in the family fails to recognise their traditional customary roles as parents, gurdians, elder brothers and sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles within family units.
It is to them that their innocent victims of incest look up with high regard for guidance, support, and transfer of traditional knowledge as members of the family.
This tradition of sharing and caring that enhances traditional values existed for a long time and pass down from from generation to generation from our ancestors' time.
We sould all go back to basics of the way our ancestors lived .... this will put an end to incest.
