in a lightweight car like that a SBF would be "adequate" I guess, because a lot of GT-40 cars came with them, however, the car that turned the tide for Ford was the version fitted with the 427 as we all know.

That car came with an aluminum cylinder head too, by the way, and aluminum intake, so it probably wasn't all that much heavier than the small block. If I were playing around with a GT-40 replica, I'd want the FE motor just for the historic value, hysteric value, and aesthetic value. Anything else would be just "ho hum".
