Thanks for the welcome and the suggestions. At the moment I am on a limited budget but I do want to got the direction of pulling the engine out and doing a proper rebuild down the line. I might go fit the low rise Edelbrock manifold and the bigger carb and perhaps a set of good extractors to begin with. I'd like to dress up the engine with a sort of more vintage look. Like old Offenhauser finned valve covers and a nice matching finned air cleaner. I can't seem to find online where I can get some for FE390.
I'm also getting all the suspension redone with urethane bushes and some custom springs and perhaps QA-1 shocks to make it handle better. At the moment she is stock and handles like a boat!!!
Please let me know how you go with the 410 Mercury conversion. I'd like to do that one day. But I fear the thing will be sucking a lot of gas. I live in Australia and gas is more expensive than in the US. But it's only my weekend car, so it's not such a big issue I guess.
