I know somewhat about these cars , but there do not seem to be any around in surviving state to examine.

I've found Ford printed info./sales brochures titled "1961 FORD POLICE CARS and Emergency Vehicles" and they list and call in print, the 330hp 390 motor - "The Mighty New 330-hp INTERCEPTOR 390 V-8 ENGINE". With fairly detailed info. about the motor , car, and options.

I hadn't thought much about them recently (had studied these documents word for word- 2 years ago) until today , when i called up an "EXPERT" in early 60's hi-permormace galy's (i will not start by namimg anyone but his deal is 1963/64 427 galaxies).

He's spouting off fact's that, to me, seem to be complete BS. Here's how it started:

When i asked him about if he knew were i could get any 14" K/H wheels(yes there are K/H 14" wheels differant the standard 14" variety .
He said they "never used them" in 61 - even when i articulated that the ford literature states so - he refuted, and said the ford books were "WRONG"

I have studied these docs. They state that all ford police cars (even if ordered with an "interceptor" 390) came with normal suspension, normal brakes and 14" wheels. the HD suspension (2 differant option levels), HD brakes , and 15" tires were ALL options. There is NO REFERANCE ANYWHERE to any of these items being tied into an interceptor package.
finally the "expert" said ALSO that ford "changed there minds" and "an interceptor is basically a 375hp motor, and the 330hp motor was A DIFFERANT, NON- NAMED motor option" ???

I find his comment hard to believe and even though he said "FORD changed the Doc's later". I say BS - as not only do the brouchures say the same thing for 1962 model year (1962 police/emergency vehicle brochures there also).

Here's is a quote from another FORD published document (title and date/author):

"Ford Times" September 1961
"The Lawman Takes a Ford"
More than half of all the police cars in the country including
those of states, turnpikes, and major cities, are Fords.
By: Melvin Beckore

QUOTE - 4th paragraph of article: (i put parenthesis's around the applicable proof of the FORD NAME of a 330hp 390 motor)

"In the public mind the ability to go fast is the criterion for a police car. If that were the only measure, Ford could easily build an all-out race car. The ("hot" 330hp V8 Interceptor) takes care of even unreasonable speed requirements. But the fact is that extremely high speed is a very minor police car requirement. Most police work calls for long, grueling hours of driving at ordinary city street speeds"

Lets remember by sept 1961 -1962 model year had stated being built and changes would be mentioned. AND in 62 brochures (and 63/64/65) a 330 hp 390 is still called (in print/ford brochures) "390 INTERCEPTOR".

I think this guy should keep to 63/64 cars (and possibly 61 390 HI-PO 390 cars) as the interceptor 330hp is a COMPLETELY differant animal.

I can't stand it when an expert in one arena, thinks that he is then one in all other closely related area's.

This Expert is from Florida - and all i have to say is - i'll believe the FORD brochures myself. i think he is FULL of &^%^%.

If anyone has a survivor car and/or can come up with any PROVABLE facts to refute these FORD printed DOC's - then please let me know.

All docunments/brochures are viewable at www.copcar.com . On left column , of their opening webpage - click "copcar Brochures".

The various lists of manufactor's, and years they have are listed.

PS - Along the same train of thought , did you know that in 1960 - a 352 HP 360 horsepower optioned galaxie did not automatically come with the HD suspension or brakes, they were additional options .You can look at the original (HOT ROD? - i can't remember for sure , but i have it). And it not only states so , it says that the 352HP 390 car which the author rode in with the FORD test driver , on the FORD proving grounds test track (pictured in the article) , did not have them !

Remember , i am not talking of 1961 390 hi-po cars. They had HD suspension/brake options that automatically came (were included ) as part of the HI-PO package. I am talking of 1960 352HP and 1961 390 "INTERCEPTOR" cars.

PSS - There's ANOTHER - who does not believe that in 1961 , all 3 (or 4 if you want to include tri-power optioned cars) - 300hp , 330hp, 375hp, & 401 hp 390 motors were coded "Z" in vin.

Could someone verify this fact for him. He would not believe me. And said he would only believe people from this forum.
