I found a 66 Galaxie for sale that the owner says was a 427 car. It is missing the engine and transmission. It has the 427 badges and cast iron header type exhaust. It was a manual transmission car.
The thing is is that the engine code onthe vin is an "L". I thought this should be an "R". The car is in pretty good shape otherwise but he wants a lot of money for it.
Can anyone here help please?
Thanks

I am still interested in the Galaxie. It is really in good shape for a car here in Michigan. The guy that owns it said the guy he bought it from bought from the estate of some ex Ford big wheel.
The exhaust system looks like it came off a 460 or something. They look like theold cast iron headers but the ports of funny shaped and they only have 5 bolts in sort of a zig zag pattern.
I will get the whole vin number

As Kevin says, the exhaust described sounds like the special modified ones used on the SOHC's, of which there were six Galaxies built. Basically, Ford took the stock '65 long branch headers, cut the exhaust flanges off, and welded the SOHC exhaust flanges on-with the appropriate flatter angle that the SOHC's need. I don't remember for sure, but look at the heater motor cover. The 64's required it to be "clearanced" for the SOHC passenger valve cover-but I don't know if the '65's needed the same mod. Either way, it warrents a very close look. You might see if you can get a few pictures of those headers to post on here.

According to the 67 ford codes "L" was a 427-4V V-8 SOHC, 616 hp @ 7000 rpm (high performance). It seems like they didnt really change the codes alot till 1970 or so from my reference material.

I have never heard of an "L" engine either. This website will help you break down your VIN, except fpr the engine code 'cause it doesn't list an L code. http://www.ford.7litre.com/decode.htm#engine

you just may have stumbled on one of the rarest cars built. There was a couple of Cammer cars built, and when you say staggered bolt pattern, a light went off in my grey matter. Could it be? You need to post pics of them, and the car. Do you know the difference between the 429 C-Js (not staggered) and the bolt patterns involved? I know there was one a Ford exec used to drive. Can you crawl under it and find the axle tag? Look at the fuel line size too, has to be a 3/8th's, not 5/16th's. Cant have power steering. What kind of money are you calling big? Appologies for the L remarks but misrepresentation is rampant.

...may be a very rare car. Throughly check the frame for rot. If you have the dough for it go ahead and buy it.
I'll decode the VIN when I get back from work. I have a reprint Ford Mercury shop manual.

1966 Galaxie 500 Convertible built in Chicago Illinois, still has factory orginal 352 FE with factory C6AF-L 1.12 Autolite 4100, and many more factory parts. Car is in good condition.
6: 1966
S: Pilot Plant
68 is the body serial code for 2 door Fastback.
L is ?
103472 is the consecutive build number which began at 100001 so this car is the 3,472 car built.
63c: 2 Door Fastback
M: exterior paint color White
25: interior trim Red Vinyl
15b: date code 15th of Febuary
84: is the district code for Home Office Reserve
9: 4.11:1 rear axle
5: 4 speed manual
Sounds like this is a rare car.

installed over the years by owners. But the "factory" ones were out there too. The one in Detroit (maybe the one you are talking about), the one the astronaut had ( I had a pick of that one somewhere), and one that the Barris Bros had for their model (I have it). Mike Schmidt had one, (brain-lock at the moment, but I think Jerry Harvey Ford too). AAURRGGGHH. You have to show some pics. Mortgage your house if you have to, dont let this slip away if its for real.

Wow that vin and plate decode does look rare. I used the old ford parts microfish here at work. I can add that it shows 2 DR fastback w/bucket seats and that the Pilot Plant was in (Allen Park). The fish doesn't show an L untill 69 or so for an inline 6.
