A friend of mine has a 2 bbl 390 out of a 69? Ranger that he wants to put in his 80 Bronco. I am not familiar with the Ford stuff, so I have a few questions.

I found some info on the CR on the internet and was wondering if it is fact. 8.6:1? How much deck clearence do the pistons have typically from the factory? How far can you mill the heads without having problems? We want torque and we want to use a Performer intake. Is this a good choice or is there something better available from a different company? How much lift can the stock valvetrain handle? Is the valvetrain adjustable on the 390? Are typical aftermarket cams for this engine have a small base circle requiring longer pushrods? What size are the combustion chambers in these heads? I know, lots of questions but I don't know these engines at all! And I want to do it right! Also if anybody has any special things to look out for on these engine, it would be appreciated!

The plan is to bump compression a little, keep the quench tight, aftermarket intake and carb, and we have headers for it already.Don't know what they are, but they look like Hedman headers (came with engine). We are also changing the points to electronic. Also a new cam. I am looking at a Crane cam- 260/272 .501/.533 lift but I am not going to choose a cam until I can find out what compression I can get out of it without touching the bottom end. Probably going to settle on 9:1 or there abouts. The Bronco will be used for pulling trailers and pulling cars out of ditches. Work truck!TIA
