Brice Being Promoted to Captain

I was watching the last Emergency! episode (I have it on tape) and saw that Brice was promoted to Captain the same time that Johnny and Roy was. My question is the guy who played Brice during the show (James G. Richardson) was not the same guy who played Brice in the final episode. Do you know why that was?
