Philippines: Muslim rebels behead troops
Basilan, 11 July (AKI)- Almost 30 people have been killed in the southern Philippines in the heaviest fighting in months between troops and Muslim rebels, both sides said on Wednesday. Military spokesman Lt. Col. Ariel Caculitan said the militants had killed 14 marines, beheading 10 of them.
The country's largest Muslim rebel group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), said its cadres defended themselves when marines moved into their encampment on the island of Basilan on Tuesday, triggering a fierce nine-hour gunbattle.
Nine other marines were wounded and at least four rebels were killed during the incident, according to the Filipino military.
The conflict occurred while the marines were searching for Italian priest, Father Giancarlo Bossi, who was seized by kidnappers believed to be from either the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group or the MILF.
Father Bossi was seized by armed men near the coastal village of Bulawan near Zamboanga on 10 June.
Marine spokesman Lt Col Ariel Caculitan said the marines encountered some 300 armed men during their search for him.
"We were totally outnumbered and we had no time to recover enemy casualties but we have reports of dead and injured on their side," Caculitan said.
A spokesman for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) later confirmed its members had been involved in the clash, even though the MILF is involved in peace talks with the government.
Mohagher Iqbal, the chief negotiator for the MILF, said the marines had attacked one of the group's strongholds, violating a ceasefire agreement, and his forces had fought back.
"The incident could have been avoided if the government had co-ordinated with our forces in Basilan before they actually moved in," he told reporters. "Our forces were attacked, we only defended ourselves."
But he denied that the MILF was responsible for the beheadings, or that it was involved in the priest's kidnapping.
Iqbal said the rebels lost four fighters and seven were wounded, but believed they had killed 25 soldiers, seized 27 assault rifles and destroyed two military trucks.
Despite the conflicting accounts, both versions indicate it was the single biggest battle in the restive southern Philippines for months. At least 30 rebels, three soldiers and one civilian were killed in clashes on the nearby island of Jolo in April.
The MILF was founded in 1977 and has a long-term goal of creating a separate Islamic state in the Philippines. Based in central Mindanao, it is believed to have 12,000 members.
