What a marvellous ship! Now I want to see the FREMM. First two will be named Aquitaine and Normandie, right?

The Normans practiced a form of strict primogeniture. The younger siblings were trained at war and then were left to fend for themselves. This created a surplus of landless lords that made the Normans natural colonialists and conquerors.

The first FREMM will be named Aquitaine! Isnt the Aquitaine being built as we speak? Thus we might see the first hull tasting sea water next spring!

The Horizon is an amazing ship, too bad we get only 2 instead of the 4 expected! Would be nice as well that they add 16 more vertical launchers for SCALP NAVAL as far as the ship has been designed to be able to carry 64 launchers.

Great name, though there are other well-known french knights. Personally, I had never heard of this "Paul" before.

Great name, though there are other well-known french knights. Personally, I had never heard of this "Paul" before.

He was not a real medieval knight. His real name was Jean Paul de Saumeur, a French admiral who distinguished by destroying half a dozen of Turkish ships during a campaign in the Mediterranean. He was knighted, thus the name Chevalier Paul.

He is a minor character really, but all the big names like Duquesne, Tourville and Degrasse are already taken. Should have been named Tourville really.

Nice photos!!! Thank you for posting them.

"Korea has not been the only battle ground since the end of the Second World War. Men have fought and died in Malaya, in Greece, in the Philippines, in Algeria and Cuba, and Cyprus and almost continuously on the Indo-Chinese Peninsula. No nuclear weapons have been fired. No massive nuclear retaliation has been considered appropriate. This is another type of war, new in its intensity, ancient in its origin--war by guerrillas, subversives, insurgents, assassins, war by ambush instead of by combat; by infiltration, instead of aggression, seeking victory by eroding and exhausting the enemy instead of engaging him. It is a form of warfare uniquely adapted to what has been strangely called 'wars of liberation,' to undermine the efforts of new and poor countries to maintain the freedom that they have finally achieved. It preys on economic unrest and ethnic conflicts. It requires in those situations where we must counter it, and these are the kinds of challenges that will be before us in the next decade if freedom is to be saved, a whole new kind of strategy, a wholly different kind of force, and therefore a new and wholly different kind of military training."-President Kennedy's Address at Graduation Exercises of the U.S. Military Academy, 1962
------------------------------
"The reason I'll be released is the same reason you think I'll be convicted. I do rub shoulders with some of the most vile, sadistic men calling themselves leaders today. But some of these men are the enemies of your enemies. And while the biggest arms dealer in the world is your boss - the President of the United States, who ships more merchandise in a day than I do in a year - sometimes it's embarrassing to have his fingerprints on the guns. Sometimes he needs a freelancer like me to supply forces he can't be seen supplying. So. You call me evil, but unfortunately for you, I'm a necessary evil."-Yuri Orlov, Lord of War
------------------------------
"Of all the weapons in the vast soviet arsenal, nothing was more profitable than Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947. More commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov. It's the world's most popular assault rifle. A weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesn't break, jam, or overheat. It'll shoot whether it's covered in mud or filled with sand. It's so easy, even a child can use it; and they do. The Soviets put the gun on a coin. Mozambique put it on their flag. Since the end of the Cold War, the Kalashnikov has become the Russian people's greatest export. After that comes vodka, caviar, and suicidal novelists. One thing is for sure, no one was lining up to buy their cars."-Yuri Orlov, Lord of War

France calls anything frigat or almost, the LaFayette, FREMM and Forbin class.

Only Forbin is a Destroyer in NATO classification.

Hmmm...I think the FREMM are destroyers as well. There's no equivalent for the word "destroyer" in French, simple as that. The Fregate (frigate) englobes destroyers as well in French.

So the title is a misnomer. It should be, Horizon Destroyer Chevalier Paul in English and Horizon Fregate Chevalier Paul in French.

The F125 is a destroyer. Germany also used the term Frigates for its destroyers. Weapon load is pretty much irrelvent. The F125 has piss-poor sensors compared to the Horizon.

The Improved Sea Sparow to an ASTER.

TROLL: An ATER 15 is NOT a self-protection missile it is designed to protect the ships around the launcher andto be used within a network.

NOT the case of the IS-Sparrow.

size, roll and tonnage doesn't mean anything these days compared with what is painted on the hull.
just compare these:

Sachsen f-219. 5,690 t, 143 meter. Air defence frigate.
zeven provincien f-802. 6,050 t, 144 meter. Air defence frigate.
Álvaro de Bazán F-101. 6,250 t, 147 meter. Air defnce frigate.
Fridtjof Nansen F-310. 5,290 t, 137 meter. Multipurpose frigate.
Iroquois class D-280. 5,100 t, 130 meter. helicopter/guided missle destroyer
Daring D-32. 8,090 t, 152 meter. Air defence destroyer

horizon D-621. 6635 t, 152 meter. Air defence frigate.
FREMM D-628. 5600 t, 133 meter. Multipurpose frigate.
Cassard D-614. 4500 t, 139 meter. Air defence frigate.
Georges Leygues D-641. 4500 t, 139 meters. Multipurpose frigate.

seems there is no universal classification system

Actualy, all of the ships with more then 6000t of displacement should be called DDs due to there size & armament they carry.

The Iroquois should be reclasefied as a FFG (thought 20 or 30 years ago it would have been a DDG) & bigger vessel as DDG, becouse at the end beeing named FF is just due to political reasons (sounds less offensive & violent)
