German pilot says sorry over wartime bomb raids


A Luftwaffe pilot has issued a tearful apology to residents in Bath - the city he dive-bombed in 1942 - saying: "War is madness."
Willi Schludecker, 87, who decimated dozens of buildings during Second World War raids, said sorry to 300 veterans and their families at a moving ceremony.

Speaking through a translator, Mr Schludecker, dressed in a simple suit, asked for forgivenADVERTISEMENTess for the "dreadful harm" he had done.

As the German stood before poppy wreaths send by relatives of the war dead, he explained that he was only 22 when he flew his Dornier 217E-4 to attack England from bases in Holland and France.

He told the city's Memorial Garden: "When I joined the air force I was very young and I just wanted to fly. I did not think about the future. But when I started flying missions, I soon realised the dangers of my job and then I lived only from flight to flight.

"You must understand the average survival time of a bomber pilot over Great Britain was only seven missions.

"In April 1942 I took part in the first two raids on your city during the Bath Blitz. On the occasion of the third attack, I had to return to base before reaching the target due to engine trouble.

"Of course, at the time I was not aware of the awful damage our bombardment has caused. But now, on only my first visit to Bath, I have seen all the pictures taken on the ground here after the attacks. I am deeply touched by the pictures I have seen and I realise that the war caused dreadful harm to your city and its people.

"There is no other way for me but to ask you all for forgiveness for any pain that I might have inflicted when I came to your city in 1942. Please accept my sincere apology."

Many of these WW2 vets (on all sides) are approaching the end of their lives and they carry guilt over their participation in the events that occurred 65 years ago. They feel the need to make atonement. You have to admire them for that, the ones who come forward and repudiate war and their involvement in it.

I'd like to see similar statements from those who bombed Dresden, Pearl Harbor and Tokyo. Some of those wounds have not healed and they need contrition from those who participated in them.

Is their anybody left who took part in the bombing of Pearl Harbour? I was under the impression that most or at least a hell of a lot of the pilots and aircrew who took part were wiped out at Midway.
