The death toll seems awfully high. What kind of building materials are used in the area?

"Korea has not been the only battle ground since the end of the Second World War. Men have fought and died in Malaya, in Greece, in the Philippines, in Algeria and Cuba, and Cyprus and almost continuously on the Indo-Chinese Peninsula. No nuclear weapons have been fired. No massive nuclear retaliation has been considered appropriate. This is another type of war, new in its intensity, ancient in its origin--war by guerrillas, subversives, insurgents, assassins, war by ambush instead of by combat; by infiltration, instead of aggression, seeking victory by eroding and exhausting the enemy instead of engaging him. It is a form of warfare uniquely adapted to what has been strangely called 'wars of liberation,' to undermine the efforts of new and poor countries to maintain the freedom that they have finally achieved. It preys on economic unrest and ethnic conflicts. It requires in those situations where we must counter it, and these are the kinds of challenges that will be before us in the next decade if freedom is to be saved, a whole new kind of strategy, a wholly different kind of force, and therefore a new and wholly different kind of military training."-President Kennedy's Address at Graduation Exercises of the U.S. Military Academy, 1962

Earthquake details

The epicentre was at 31.084° N 103.267° ECoordinates: 31.084° N 103.267° E, in Wenchuan County, Ngawa Prefecture, 90 km northwest of Chengdu, with its main tremor so far occurring at 14:28:04 local time (06:28:04 am GMT) on Monday 12 May 2008. Early reports of the earthquake's magnitude ranged from 7.6 to 8.0. More than 16 major aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.0 to 6.0 were recorded within nine hours of the main tremor.

Office workers in Chengdu reported a "continuous shaking for about two or three minutes", with many people rushing outside.

Tectonic summary

According to the USGS, "the earthquake occurred as the result of motion on a northeast striking reverse fault or thrust fault on the northwestern margin of the Sichuan Basin. The earthquake’s epicenter and focal-mechanism are consistent with it having occurred as the result of movement on the Longmenshan fault or a tectonically related fault. The earthquake reflects tectonic stresses resulting from the convergence of crustal material slowly moving from the high Tibetan Plateau, to the west, against strong crust underlying the Sichuan Basin and southeastern China."

"On a continental scale, the seismicity of central and eastern Asia is a result of northward convergence of the Indian Plate against the Eurasian Plate with a velocity of about 50 mm/y. The convergence of the two plates is broadly accommodated by the uplift of the Asian highlands and by the motion of crustal material to the east away from the uplifted Tibetan Plateau."

"The northwestern margin of the Sichuan Basin has previously experienced destructive earthquakes. The magnitude 7.5 earthquake of August 25, 1933, killed more than 9,300 people."

Immediate aftermath

Office buildings in Shanghai's financial district, including the Jin Mao Building and the Hong Kong New World Tower, were evacuated. Phone calls to emergency response numbers in Chengdu were repeatedly busy. A receptionist at the Tibet Hotel in Chengdu said the hotel had evacuated its guests, but said things were "calm" there now. Workers at a Ford plant in Sichuan were evacuated for about 10 minutes. Reporters in Chengdu said they saw cracks on walls of some residential buildings in the downtown areas, but no building collapsed. The Chengdu airport was shut down, and one Singapore Airlines flight was diverted and landed in nearby Kunming. Many Beijing office towers were evacuated, including the building housing the media offices for the organizers of the 2008 Summer Olympics. None of the Olympic venues were damaged.

China's President Hu Jintao has said that the disaster response would be rapid. One hour after the earthquake, Premier Wen Jiabao flew to the earthquake area to direct the rescue work.

Damage

All highways into Wenchuan are damaged, resulting in delayed arrival of the rescue troops. Over 2300 base stations of China Mobile went offline, while the China Unicom network in that area broke down entirely. In Beichuan county, 80% of the buildings collapsed according to Xinhua. In the city of Shifang, the collapse of two chemical plants led to leakage of some 80 tons of liquid ammonia, with hundreds of people reported buried. In the city of Dujiangyan,south-east of the epicentre,a whole school collapsed with 900 students buried and 50 dead. The Juyuan middle school, were lots of teenagers were buried are being excavated out by the cilvilans and the cranes.

Casualties

According to a geophysicist with the United States Geological Survey, an earthquake of this magnitude is "very dangerous" and can cause major damage. The quake caused at least 8,500 deaths in Sichuan province according to a report at 16:10 GMT on 12 May 2008, but this figure may increase as more reports come in. In Chongqing, 5 students were reported killed, 20 more buried and more than 100 injured when one primary school collapsed. Ngawa Tibetan and_Qiang Autonomous Prefecture government announced 39 people dead and 5 missing. In the city of Mianyang, one person was killed by a falling water tower. Xinhua reported that more than 50 students were confirmed killed and more still buried when the Juyuan highschool building collapsed in Dujiangyan, the city nearest to the epicenter. In the neighboring provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu and Chongqing, the death tolls were 57, 26 and 50 respectively. Reuters cited an incomplete statistic of about 9,000 deaths in Sichuan from Sichuan Seismological Bureau as of May 12, 22:20 Beijing Time.

Death toll in China earthquake up to nearly 9,000
By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN – 1 hour ago

CHONGQING, China (AP) — One of the worst earthquakes in decades struck central China on Monday, killing nearly 9,000 people, trapping about 900 students under the rubble of their school and causing a toxic chemical leak, state media reported.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake devastated a hilly region of small cities and towns in Sichuan and nearby provinces. The official Xinhua News Agency said 8,533 people died in Sichuan alone and dozens of other deaths were reported in surrounding areas.

Xinhua said 80 percent of the buildings had collapsed in Beichuan county in Sichuan province after the quake, raising fears the overall death toll could increase sharply.

State media said a chemical plant in Shifang city had cratered, burying hundreds of people and spilling more than 80 tons of toxic liquid ammonia from the site.

The earthquake sent thousands of people rushing out of buildings and into the streets hundreds of miles away in Beijing and Shanghai. The temblor was felt as far away as Vietnam and Thailand.

The quake posed a challenge to a government already grappling with discontent over high inflation and a widespread uprising among Tibetans in western China while trying to prepare for the Beijing Olympics this August.

It hit about 60 miles northwest of Chengdu in the middle of the afternoon when classrooms and office towers were full. There were several smaller aftershocks, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site.

The temblor struck hilly country leading up to the Tibetan highlands, toppling buildings in small cities and towns in the largely rural area. About 1,200 pandas — 80 percent of the surviving wild population in China — live in several mountainous areas of Sichuan.

The earthquake, China's deadliest since 1976, occurred in an area with numerous fault lines that have triggered destructive temblor before. A magnitude 7.5 earthquake in Diexi, Sichuan that hit on August 25, 1933 killed more than 9,300 people.

Xinhua said 50 bodies had been pulled from the debris of the school building in Juyuan town but did not say if the children were alive. Xinhua reported students also were buried under five other toppled schools in Deyang city.

Xinhua said its reporters saw buried teenagers struggling to break loose from underneath the rubble of the three-story building in Juyuan "while others were crying out for help."

Two girls were quoted by Xinhua as saying they escaped because they had "run faster than others."

Photos showed heavy cranes trying to remove rubble from the ruined school. Other photos posted on the Internet and found on the Chinese search engine Baidu showed arms and a torso sticking out of the rubble of the school as dozens of people worked to free them, using their hands to move concrete slabs.

Calls into the city did not go through as panicked residents quickly overloaded the telephone system. The quake affected telephone and power networks, and even state media appeared to have few details of the disaster.

"In Chengdu, mobile telecommunication convertors have experienced jams and thousands of servers were out of service," said Sha Yuejia, deputy chief executive officer of China Mobile.

Although it was difficult to telephone Chengdu, an Israeli student, Ronen Medzini, sent a text message to The Associated Press saying there were power and water outages there.

"Traffic jams, no running water, power outs, everyone sitting in the streets, patients evacuated from hospitals sitting outside and waiting," he said.

The road to Wenchuan from Chendu was cut off by landslides, state media said, slowing the rescue efforts.

The earthquake also rattled buildings in Beijing, some 930 miles to the north, less than three months before the Chinese capital was expected to be full of hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors for the Summer Olympics.

Li Jiulin, a top engineer on the 91,000-seat National Stadium — known as the Bird's Nest and the jewel of the Olympics — was conducting an inspection at the venue when the quake occurred. He told reporters the building was designed to withstand a 8.0 quake.

"The Olympic venues were not affected by the earthquake," said Sun Weide, a spokesman for the Beijing organizing committee. "We considered earthquakes when

Skyscrapers swayed in Shanghai and in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, 100 miles off the southeastern Chinese coast. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake was felt as far away as the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, where some people hurried out of swaying office buildings and into the streets downtown. A building in the Thai capital of Bangkok also was evacuated after the quake was felt there.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake is considered a major event, capable of causing widespread damage and injuries in populated areas.

The last serious earthquake in China was in 2003, when a 6.8-magnitude quake killed 268 people in Bachu county in the west of Xinjiang.

China's deadliest earthquake in modern history struck the northeastern city of Tangshan on July 28, 1976, killing 240,000 people.

Xinhua said 80 percent of the buildings had collapsed in Beichuan county in Sichuan province after the quake, raising fears the overall death toll could increase sharply.

That is horrible. I really hope the death toll doesn't climb into tens of thousands.

RIP to those who died, may the people left behind hold strong.

Siege of Tobruk - One German POW said: "I cannot understand you Australians. In Poland, France, and Belgium, once the tanks got through the soldiers took it for granted that they were beaten. But you are like demons. The tanks break through and your infantry still keep fighting." Rommel wrote of seeing "a batch of some fifty or sixty Australian prisoners ... marched off close behind us—immensely big and powerful men, who without question represented an elite formation of the British Empire, a fact that was also evident in battle."

Didn't the authorities make sure that the buildings are specially constructed just like in Japan for quake-prone areas? That will save lots of lives.

Well, I guess you forgot about the Kobe earthquake in Japan of 1995? Even with strict Japanese building codes for quakes they lost 5,100 lives. Mothernature is powerful and humans are defenseless against it. This area is also not as developed as other parts of China therefore buildings i guess aren't as good to withstand quakes and most of these are quite old.

Well, if it truly was a 7.6 - 8.0 that is a HUGE Earthquake. You would have to have very high building standards, like required in Japan and parts of California to not be totally devestated - and that pretty much doubles the cost of buildings. I am skeptical they built to those standards in that area.

The truth is out there - you just may not like hearing it.

It's a difficult thing to say, but the casualties could've been much higher (rose to 9200 now?) if the epicenter was just a handful of km closer to cheng du (10 million ppl!). Since there are 100 million ppl in sichuan, the casualties were bound to be high regardless of where it hit. Very hard to prepare for something like this.

More confirmed dead at collapsed school, over 300 still unaccounted for

military having a hard time getting to epicenter due to destroyed roads

rescue workers flown near epicenter

hospitals and beds being made outside in case of aftershock

My cousin in law who is a chinese version of SWAT, has been parachuted from ShenZhen to the mountians in Sichuan to rescue people.

7.8 magnitude rector scale !!! And it was felt from Thailand to Beijing across 4000km wide.let's not forget every single point is 30 times more powerful than the previous one.
So 7.8 rector scale is REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY powerful. I bet even a lot well build buildings in California can't stand I direct hit if they are placed at the epic center.

So far reportly 10,000 death in a population 87,250,000 province plus one municipality-- Chongqing City population 31,442,300 region. Basically in a region that has about 10% the whole chinese population, 10,000 est. death out of 110 million people. So roughly the death toll rate in government executive areas is about accroding to my math : 9.09090909 ¡Á 10^-5 which is less than 1 in 10000. It is bad, but I am glad that the death toll rate didn't go any higher.

I respect PLA's commitment and courage in rescuing the victims in almost all natural disasters in China, in particular the human wall to block the flood waters.

However, don't China have a dedicated national disaster relief agency to coordinate rescue efforts in a large scale disaster? I am not quite sure if the PLA soldiers have the right equipment or training to do rescue work.

The UK is very prepared and willing to help China,

UK 'ready to help quake-hit China'
Last Updated: Tuesday, 13 May 2008, 11:31 GMT- Search: China earthquake aid

Survivors rest near a collapsed building in Mianzhu, Sichuan ProvinceThe UK is poised to help China deal with the devastation wrought by an earthquake that has killed around 10,000 people, Foreign Secretary David Miliband said.
Schools were among buildings toppled by the 7.9-magnitude quake, the country's worst for 30 years, with most of the casualties in the Sichuan province.
Mr Miliband said: "The UK stands ready to assist." He added it was "a further and tragic shock to a region already trying to handle the devastation in Burma".
"Emerging news of the loss of life and devastation in China is deeply saddening," he went on.

"My thoughts are with the Chinese people and those families who have suffered loss. The Chinese government are to be commended for their quick and efficient response."
A Beijing-based charity worker earlier predicted that the death toll would rise.
Dale Rutstein of Unicef China said he had only been able to get limited reports from the epicentre of the disaster in Sichuan Province.
He said: "It is very difficult, almost impossible to get through on the phone but we have had brief, sketchy, conversations with local press reporters who have backed up the main picture.
"I would expect the death toll to rise as Sichuan is one of the most populated provinces and one of the poorest.
"There are a lot of people living in marginal areas that are difficult to get to and a lot of the buildings in those areas are sub-standard and could collapse very quickly."

what upsets me the most is the school kids that are unaccounted for. Their lives have barely started.

@tankee1981, I think the military are great first responders, they provide medical care, food, shelter, and establish order. They may lack rescue expertise but can be on the scene within hours and without bureaucratic red tape.

God punish them for having made street protest against Carefour, eh, eh, eh.

(The US have endured the same at New Orlean when they've made their little crisis too against France )

No, seriously now: may they have the courage to overcome this true tragedy.

RIP.

The problem with outside help (even from other Chinese provinces) is the airports are already jammed with personnel and equipment equipment flooding in.

The main cities had moderate damage because of the housing code but the villages and small towns were obliterated.

The death toll could climb further. This is the "big one" as far earthquakes go.

Very sad.

From a Chinese military follower's standpoint, Chengdu aircraft combine is there as well so could have an impact on J-10s and FC-1s coming out this year.

Still climbing, official figure at the moment is hitting 15,000, they say it could be as bad as 50,000.

Siege of Tobruk - One German POW said: "I cannot understand you Australians. In Poland, France, and Belgium, once the tanks got through the soldiers took it for granted that they were beaten. But you are like demons. The tanks break through and your infantry still keep fighting." Rommel wrote of seeing "a batch of some fifty or sixty Australian prisoners ... marched off close behind us—immensely big and powerful men, who without question represented an elite formation of the British Empire, a fact that was also evident in battle."

i had a little experience in the pakistani earth quake that killed like 80000 ppl

ppl trapped in the buildings usualy die even if you manage to get them out
thats is if one of there body part is trapped there
once you free them the blood thats rotten in the body iin the trapped leg or hand rused in to the body and that wil mostly cause death
half of the ppl we pulled out alive died later on

two most disturbing things are
1) stench of death
2) children with no parents
3) girls women who loose every one

our team had 3 children with us for 3 days once you pick a kid up you dont want to give it away to a strange even if he is an aid worker .luckey for me those kids maternal uncle arrive after 3rd day from dubai and i handed them over they lost all

then the young girls who loose every one you dont want to give them up to some sort of ngo who knows wat kinda ppl they are after all they are females and they are weak

keeping all these things in mind plus that smell make your head spin

but if your working there then it does not realy bother you its when you get back from that area in your home then its screwes your mind for a few days

Unofficial tally of confirmed death is more than 20,000 now. I think the saddest part is so many kids died in numerous schools that collapsed. If it turns out corruption led to shoddy construction, I hope those official burn to death.

Yes, send these corrupt officials who indirectly caused the death of these children to life in hard labour camps.

"will china ask for foreign help
like those brits who digged out survivours from colapsed buildings they have good experience in locating alive ppl
also those turks and pakistanies who worked in such effected areas and have first hand experience in rescue work?"

China didnt ask for help but foreign countries have offered aid or personel to assist, and China said they're welcomed to do so. China is quite experienced of handling large scale disasters as this is not their first or the biggest. They've proven that for the last few days.

Ignore the bogus title of this video but basically sums up what i want to say starting from 2:21:
