Marshall Specialist Vehicles Delivers Second Norwegian Role 2 Mobile Hospital Early

CAMBRIDGE, England --- A second Role 2 mobile field hospital has been delivered to the Norwegian Defence Logistic Organization (NDLO) 5 months early. Marshal Specialist Vehicles (MSV) the Cambridge UK Specialist Vehicle and Shelter manufacturer has delivered the second of three hospitals 5 months earlier than originally planned to meet Norwegian urgent operational requirements. The total contract value for the three hospitals, through life capability management (TLCM) and customer support over three years is in excess of £22M.
The hospital, which has been built to conform to full Norwegian and UK NHS standards, offers all the facilities expected in a fully fledged district hospital with full facility such as CAT scan, X-ray, pharmacy, medical gas provision. The basic core of the hospital has full operating theatre and casualty treatment facilities and comes with 16 acute care beds. Additional wards with additional beds for other sick and wounded can be added as required.
The basic building blocks of the hospital are the unique MSV double extension shelter. These shelters retract into standard ISO 20 ft container configuration which allows transport on C 130 Hercules Aircraft. When expanded the shelter increases to almost three times its retracted volume. Expansion and contraction is achieved by simple switch controls.
The hospital can be deployed and operate in all climatic conditions. Full CBRN collective protection, decontamination and detection are integrated into the hospital.
When fully deployed the hospital occupies one and a half acres and takes two days to fully erect and set to work. However the surgical facilities can be operational in a matter of hours. Integrated water purification and power generation make the hospital self contained enabling it to be deployed into operational area in the event of conflict or natural disaster.
Commenting on the Programme Peter Callaghan Chief Executive of MSV said “The only way the team that worked on this programme achieved the early delivery was by real commitment, effective ‘hands on’ programme management and forming a very effective team with the NDLO”.
Commenting on the delivery Jan Due chief surgeon at the university hospital in Tromsø who has been operating in Field Hospitals in Lebanon in 1978 and in Afghanistan last year said “This hospital is both more stable and has a much higher standard than the first field hospitals.”
Geir Gregersen, Chief of Norwegian Army ISTAR group – medical section said “The hospital works in other words like a civilian hospital. It is a high technical standard. If you for instance are in Afghanistan and need help for an operation from a doctor in Norway, there is no problem to transmit the whole operation by TV.”
The Full Second Norwegian Defence Logistics Organization Role 2 Hospital undergoing full systems tests and final inspection by the NDLO at MSV’s Cambridge Facility. Fully protected against CBRN threats the hospital offers full medical and surgical facilities coupled with 15 emergency beds (others can be added in other modules if needed) based on 22 expandable ISO 20ft containers.
