I am currently reading the book Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895: Perceptions, Power, and Primacy which inspired me to find this images. It was an interesting conflict that set the stage for what would happen down the road including the Japanese war with Russia and World War II. This images can't convey just how outclassed and outmoded the Chinese "military" was. The only high point was the Chinese Navy and even then while it had some impressive vessels it was low on coal, ammo, and trained and capable leaders and seamen.

Nice pictures interesting to see that they are still emphasizing the swords and close combat. Although many european paintings do the same thing as well. I like that style that they have of depicting battles, it is different from what you normally see.

In many of the prints the Russians are depicted with an amount of respect. Japan wanted to see itself fighting a great and powerful empire and depicted the Russians as such. That one of the Russian prince in the green on the white horse is quite telling.

yeah, that struck me, how they displayed the heroics of both sides, and made all the soldiers look very similar, both chinese/russian. Even in european cartoons from the period, they would draw grotesque features onto chinese but not japanese. I am sure most hereare farmilliar with the ww2 era ones though, where it is the reverse.

Also, an interesting feature is the one featureing the Russian lancers, the opposite of all the images of Euro's with guns vs. Natives with spears in a way.

In many of the news reports of the time the westerners were stunned at the accomplishments of the Japanese military against the larger Chinese forces. Before the war most thought that the Japanese wouldn't have a chance but once the Japanese started to win battles this changed dramatically. There were statements like "we need to see the Japanese as equal to Europeans now", "As Europe had to contend with America it now has to contend with Asia", "Japan modernized in a short amount of time, taking in the best of western thought and technology and dispensing with the bad". In times of racism this was high praise and was present in many western newspapers. This war was a turning point in Asia and indeed the world. A power that wasn't white or European had grown to challenge an ancient empire and if you fast forward to the war between Japan and Russia it challenged a white European empire and came out victorious.
