Pentagon report: Suicides in U.S. army at 2-decade high
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon says the number of suicides in the U.S. army last year was the most in nearly two decades.

Two defence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, say there were 108 army suicides in 2007, the most since 1990.

The officials refused to be identified by name because the full, official report on the suicides has yet to be released.

Preliminary figures released in January showed as many as 121 troops killed themselves. However, officials said at the time that a number of the deaths were still being investigated.

The 108 suicides last year followed 102 in 2006 and 85 in 2005.

The increases comes despite a host of efforts to improve the mental health of a force stressed by lengthy and repeated deployments to Iraq.

Apparently US army had less than one third as many suicides in 2007 as the Russian army:

"Almost an entire battalion of Russian soldiers committed suicide last year, the country's chief military prosecutor has said.
A total of 341 military personnel killed themselves in 2007, a reduction of 15% on the previous year."

Tbf, I think you can double that number because many mutilated ex-soldiers commit suicide. Or so I suspect.
