Colombian army hunts for Alfonso Cano. The New FARC Commander.

6000 men of the Colombian army are hunting Alfonso Cano, the new FARC commander in chief, in the mountains between Valle, Cauca, Quindío and Huila in the south of Colombia, Colombian newspaper El Tiempo reports.

The army is fighting a group of 250 guerrillas, according to the Army, part of Cano’s security rings. Aside the guerrillas, the soldiers have to fight the weather conditions too. The operation takes place approximately 3800 meters (12,500 feet) above sea level, where there’s heavy fog and almost constant rain.

“This is a ‘Cano’ has known for many years and allows him to to evade the military siege more easily, because of the many ways to escape,” a source of military intelligence of the Sixth Brigade told the newspaper.
“We can not create false expectations by saying that ‘Cano’ is here or there, but the operations are heading south of Tolima, on the borders of the departments Valle del Cauca, Cauca and Huila,” says General Jairo Herazo, commander of the Fifth Division of the army.

The army increased the intensity of the search three weeks ago and deployed an extra 3,900 soldiers in the region. Their orders are to defeat the 21st front and its columns, that directly receive orders from ‘Cano’.
According to military sources, the newspaper says, the 21st front has been receiving reinforcement from front 6, who were fighting in Valle del Cauca, implying the FARC are in defense.
