Yes.

We might not be seen among those who pray and we might not fast with those who fast, but we believe in God because we are in dire need of Him. Our burden is onerous, our road is rough and our aim is high. We have reached this faith; we did not start with it. We arrived at it through sufferings and hardships and did not receive it by inheritance nor was it handed down to us conventionally. For this reason it is invaluable for us, being the fruit of our efforts.

sunnis also, where as the shiites withdrew Khomenis statement, The Sunnis did not issue such a random blanket death order (fatwa is ruling) as it would make him a celebrity and his death martyrdom for his cause.

One for Insulting the Prophet
and another for renouncing Islam.

I thought I had.

Yes the Sunnis are gunning for him.

Once for Insulting the Prophet in the satanic verses

and again for in the 1990s addopting Islam and then turning away from it.

in shia islam it normally goes after the man who issued it dies, or for other reasons a fatwa is not a death threat although in his case it was fatwa's can be issued on sunjects suck as marriage the justice system and many other mundane and boring issues his crime was apostasy for which there are a variety of views one being death the other opposite side of the spectrum is to let Allah decide the punishment in the afterlife it depends on your school of thought sunnis are more hardline in most cases very conservative

if one wants to discuss Islamic jurisprudence 187homicide, why is it in Sunni view Blood money is paid to the victims family in lieu of death, In Shia islam the victims family must pay blood money to the agressors family for the state taking their life.

Is a fatwa like excommunication or is there something more to it?

Fatwa is a ruling by a scholar, it would be closer to a papal bull or edict.

however one must discount a fatwa in that there is no priesthood in islam, NO clerics either, and that a Fatwa is only obligatory if one has gone before the scholar and basicaly asked for it saying your knowledge on the subject is greater than my own.
