China has stationed a battery of ground-to-air missiles just 300 yards from a Beijing Olympic venue, the latest sign of tightening security with the games just 6 1/2 weeks away.

The fenced-off military compound has been set up just south of the Olympic Sports Center Stadium, a venue for soccer and modern pentathlon. It's also within a half mile of the Water Cube and the Bird's Nest National Stadium, the $450 million showpiece venue of the games.

At least two Hongqi 7 missile launchers were visible behind a 7-foot fence, with military hardware and vehicles hidden under camouflage netting. Dozen of soldiers guarded the compound on Tuesday with a notice posted on the fence: "Military Administrative District No Admittance."

for point air defence from possible 9/11 style attacks the HQ-7 or the KS-1 would be better suited as they both have a faster launch ready reaction time than if they had chosen something like the S-300, those systems (S-300, other longer range SAM) would already be in place as part of beijing's original air defences and would be located on the outskirts of the city and not for venue defence

I believe Beijing along has 4 battalions of S-300s, the newest PMU2s are also in stationed in Beijing. The HQ-7As are just-in-case pieces.

There is also a no fly zone over the Olympic venues.

And yes, HQ-7s are derived from French Crotales. HQ-7A has similar upgrades to Crotale NG and Mk3 in terms of fire control and information systems but the FM-90 missile has its range increased to 15 KMs for all targets (UAV, Cruise Missile and Plane), while VT-1's range is still limited to 11KMs.

With the Beijing MR, but not in Beijing city. TOR-M1s are stationed with armoured divisions to provide point air defence on the move.

There might be Type-90s in Beijing to provide AAA support.

Could you post the pictures? I have yet to see any AAA around the Olympic venues.

China does not operate any 85mm AAA, in Beijing your most likely going to find Type-90 35mm AAA, especially for the Olympics PLA would station their best to guard the games.

100mm AAA are most likely all retired nowadays and replaced with HQ-7s and Tors.

HQ7 would be a nice gift to Dalai Lama, if he flies his private jet from India to bomb the BirdNest

The airport is tightly guarded now, over a few weeks it will look like a warzone LOL

It is not a copy, but licensed. A lot of french technology seems to be built by China, not only for Crotale, but others such as Mistral (FN-6), Dauphin (Z-9)and 100mm naval gun.

Crotale, Daulphin and 100mm guns were acquired before the 1989 embargo.

Plus, Europe has been selling parts and technologies ever since the embargo, China isn't exactly looking to buy imported weapons systems anyways, PLA would much rather get the technology and produce it in China.
