The people of Massachusetts were fighting for Colonial rights as they were the losers of the English civil war.

It's the day we told the Bloody British, No Phucking Mo!!!
And let's not forget, to be historically accurate, that it was also the day that half of the Colonial population thought that an egregious act had been committed upon their rightful country, ruler, and savior against the dreaded French. Many Colonists, especially in the South, were very adherent and loyal to the Crown and its protections and positives. These loyalists weren't "traitors" so much as honest people worried about the future of their homes, businesses, communities, and the world situation when considering an armed rebellion against their home country that they still believed in.
Fortunately for us Americans, it didn't take the British long to dash any of the complacent good will in them and turn them toward the cause of indepenence. If the British had simply handled the entire situation differently the America we know today would part of the Commonwealth with a Governor General and a flag sporting the Union Jack in some form with a parliamentary government and long-standing personal ties to the "mother" country.
Oh well, so goes the throes of history....

I'll only say that the Spanish besieged Gibraltar for three long years before having to give up.

This July 4th was a special one. With the election coming up people needed to think about the direction they wished the country to go.
As to our British friends, for the UK the Battle of Britain was not decisive, the Battle of the Atlantic was. Without US assistance, German would still be the dominate language spoken for those who survived starvation.
