the ship will be equipped with the Gibka CIWS and it's klinok system will be modernized, probably with the installation of missiles from the Tor-M2 system. Upgrade work will be completed in 2009.

What about the huge Silex missile system? Are they replaced by Sunburns? Can they use the same launchers? Production of Silex stopped years ago, only 100 missiles estimated to remain in service in 2006. They can most likely fire the SS-N-15 missiles through standard torpedotubes anyway. Removing the huge Silex launchers would give the ship available space for other systems....

Metel is still there, Udaloys will get phased out in the next 10 years anyway, their only possible role would be striking targets in Georgia, but that would mean the Northern would have to sail them to the Black Sea.

No missiles, just AK-130/100 to hit some coastal targets in Anaklia or elsewhere, could also provide some air support for the air base in Abhazia. Like I said I highly doubt Vysotskiy would ever do this, but thats probably the closest that the Udaloy will come to seeing conflict before its decommissioning.

there is no reason to believe any of those tubes still carry the Silex and not any of a range of other missiles. There are no recent pics of Udaloys with open tubes anywhere that I know of.

These days when the tubes get loaded with new missiles you can almost be sure some guy with a camera will snap a picture. We can take an optimistic view or we can take a realistic view, they are still getting P-120s from somewhere.

The Sunburn has bigger tubes right? I dont see the reason for modernising without replacing old missile-systems where no missiles exists. And if the Udaloy can launch SS-N-15 with normal torpedo tubes i see no reason for it to carry SS-N-14, almost same weapon. The Udaloy is still a decent platform, the navy needs them fo fill the gap before the Gorskhov/Steregushiy classes enters service, new construction isn't exactly going fast in the russian navy (Lada, Borey, Graney etc) Too bad they can not build ships at a decent rate anymore, there is not many decent surface ships left, what we see today is just a new layer of paint on old platforms

the black sea fleet is a different thing from the north fleet. You will not get anywhere near that close to northern fleet ships. A British official today learned that the hard way when he was kindly kicked the hell out of a nuclear submarine facility. I have less of a problem with a P-120 which has a decent 110km range than I do with Silex.
There are no recent pics of open Udaloy tubes. MOST of the tubes are likely completely empty, some probably carry Silex but there is a very good chance that they have mounted Kh-35's in some tubes too. I am not saying that they put a good missile on any Udaloys, just that the radar guidance computer would allow for Kh-35's to be fired and it is entirely a question of installing a different railing to the tube which is the simplest of things. Kh-35 is nothing spectacular, but it is decent enough given the threat environment.

I also dont think the Russian navy is lacking in the ASM department there are still close to 60+ ships kitted out to carry the Sunburn. Most are small combatants, but Russia at present has no need for a major blue water revival.

Udaloys are much more expensive to operate than the Steregushiy, when they said the Stergushiy will be the back bone of the Russian navy they werent joking. There must be a reason why they only laid up 1 Gorshkov, Im begging to think its only a stop gap platform until something better comes along.

Future Steregushy class vessels will probably be just under 3000 tons, but they will carry Yakhonts and a 12 cell VLS that fires navalized S-400 missiles. In truth, they will be better armed than the Kirov of today. Who needs the ability to travel 6000 miles? The Russian navy has no interests 6,000 miles away. As long as it maintains the ability to kill anything and everything in the sea lanes that Russian commerce actually utilizes I have no problem.

True, i must admit, they still have some decent ships for anti-ship role. If only they could fit som decent air-defence on some larger ships. Sending Kuznetsov out on a mission with Udaloy for air-protection is insane you ask me. And a Slava class for "fishery-protection", whats up with that? Weird priority

They plan 12 surface vessels, which doesnt leave room for anything new if we count the Neustrashimiys and I. Gren. The reason they cut Novik was because it was just too expensive to operate, same fate awaits most of the current 5000t+ vessels.

Are you joking me? Better armed than Kirov?? Explain. The Kirov is packed with weapons, the only remaining REAL ship left in the russian navy, excelent air-defence, anti-ship and ASW capability, lack of land-attack but still..... Pls post some more info about navalizied S-400 missiles on Steregushy, i cant see how they can fit that on such a small ship..

I can't imagine a tiny steregushy or a small Gorskov frigate to carry the "big" S-400,40N6 missile .

It wont carry the "big" S-400 missile, only the 9m96, which by the way was demonstrated to Putin this past week so we know it will enter mass production soon. Lots of people said the 9M96 project was being phased out until this week.

Lets not forget that it was the Soviet tradition to pack tiny boats with a massive armament, the 500t Tarantul packed 8 Urans, a 76mm main gun, 4 Strelas and a Kashtan.
