I believe that International Laws gives all rights to the bigger ships. It's up to the small ships to GTFO of the way (which is absolutely normal).

This was back in the 80s, USS Yorktown was using "innocent passage" law to go through Soviet territorial waters, which gives a ship the "right" to do that if it does not pose any harm to the state and its simply passing since that is the shortest way through. However this was NOT the shortest way through for the USS Yorktown and the Soviet command made the decision to ram. The Krivak that rammed it was 1/3rd the tonnage so its not surprising that it didnt do much harm to the USS Yorktown.

Less a ram and more a nudge.

"Korea has not been the only battle ground since the end of the Second World War. Men have fought and died in Malaya, in Greece, in the Philippines, in Algeria and Cuba, and Cyprus and almost continuously on the Indo-Chinese Peninsula. No nuclear weapons have been fired. No massive nuclear retaliation has been considered appropriate. This is another type of war, new in its intensity, ancient in its origin--war by guerrillas, subversives, insurgents, assassins, war by ambush instead of by combat; by infiltration, instead of aggression, seeking victory by eroding and exhausting the enemy instead of engaging him. It is a form of warfare uniquely adapted to what has been strangely called 'wars of liberation,' to undermine the efforts of new and poor countries to maintain the freedom that they have finally achieved. It preys on economic unrest and ethnic conflicts. It requires in those situations where we must counter it, and these are the kinds of challenges that will be before us in the next decade if freedom is to be saved, a whole new kind of strategy, a wholly different kind of force, and therefore a new and wholly different kind of military training."-President Kennedy's Address at Graduation Exercises of the U.S. Military Academy, 1962
------------------------------
"The reason I'll be released is the same reason you think I'll be convicted. I do rub shoulders with some of the most vile, sadistic men calling themselves leaders today. But some of these men are the enemies of your enemies. And while the biggest arms dealer in the world is your boss - the President of the United States, who ships more merchandise in a day than I do in a year - sometimes it's embarrassing to have his fingerprints on the guns. Sometimes he needs a freelancer like me to supply forces he can't be seen supplying. So. You call me evil, but unfortunately for you, I'm a necessary evil."-Yuri Orlov, Lord of War
------------------------------
"Of all the weapons in the vast soviet arsenal, nothing was more profitable than Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947. More commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov. It's the world's most popular assault rifle. A weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesn't break, jam, or overheat. It'll shoot whether it's covered in mud or filled with sand. It's so easy, even a child can use it; and they do. The Soviets put the gun on a coin. Mozambique put it on their flag. Since the end of the Cold War, the Kalashnikov has become the Russian people's greatest export. After that comes vodka, caviar, and suicidal novelists. One thing is for sure, no one was lining up to buy their cars."-Yuri Orlov, Lord of War

Size has nothing to do with the right of way at sea!
The only thing that could affect the right of way is if it's a sailing vessel or if it's dificult to maneuver. Ships of this size aren't hard to maneuver in that sense it usually reffers to ships entering ports in narrow straits and the like.

These collisions usually happened when one ship maneuvered into a position where the other ships had to take evasive action.

why not just use a tugboat instead of being dumb and ramming a ship from the side and then getting left behind in the wake? it's not exactly hard to hook a ship and drag it off course.

Very interesting story! It looks like the US ships entered the 12 mile zone outside Sevastopol. An Elint mission was planned. They had been given several warnings and the russian ships as a last resort rammed the US ships. It was the only moderate solution left without opening fire! Result: Bezzavetny lost it's anchor and Yorktown it's Harpoon launcher.

What is the point in "ramming" USS Yorktown with a 900t patrol boat, it would be more effective to pull alongside and give them the finger.

They did what they had to do, it was the only moderate solution left. Did you expect her to open fire and start a war? At least they got their point across.

They should jump aboard and perform some blowjobs. That will be more suited in such situations.

No I'd expect them to use something bigger. They could try warning shots but they are unlikely to work.

The point wasn't to sink or kill anyone.

Just to get the point across. A ship of the same size or larger may have caused one of both ships serious damage.

The Soviets definetly careful in what they were doing. If they wanted to cause serious damage I'm sure they would have just fired a torpedo and claimed the US ship blew up from the inside.

Their national duty is to give their wifes, daughters and girlfriends to US sailors for having some fun everytime a US ship visits Roma port. Russia has as natural resources, oil, gas and aluminium. Romania has only one natural resource: Their women p**sy!

Anyway,

Unfortunatelly this brave Krivak class frigate had a very bad end. She sank at the road for scrapping in 1995. The crew of this ship should be proud because they served their country well. This insident of 1988 proves that USSR/Russian military machine was, is and will be defensive force. Russia wants peace, stability, and economical growth for the hole European continent and not only for its own. I wish Obana to be different from Bush.

If I am right the Yorktown is also dead, because is one of the first 4 Ticos with the conversional launchers instead of the MK-41 VLS.

I've been playing this very old DOS game called "5th Fleet" at work lately. Its abandonware and the graphics are nonexistent but it's a lot of fun if you take pleasure in the prospect of destroying the Soviet or US navy or both....

Even in its final years the USSR had balls of steel, Id love to see even 1 country today that will try to ram a US cruiser.

Its was a sad seeing Bezzavetniy go down, but now it will be forever preserved by the seas.
