Sunken 'pirate ship' was actually Thai trawler, owner says BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) -- Fourteen sailors are still missing from a Thai trawler that was sunk last week by the Indian navy as a suspected pirate ship, the vessel's owner said Tuesday.
Indian navy frigate INS Tabar

File image of Indian navy frigate INS Tabar

One crewman was found alive after six days adrift in the Gulf of Aden, and one is confirmed dead, said Wicharn Sirichaiekawat, owner of the Ekawat Nava 5.

Last week, India's navy reported that the frigate INS Tabar had battled a pirate "mother vessel" in the gulf November 18, leaving the ship ablaze and likely sunk. Wicharn said that vessel was his ship, which was in the process of being seized by pirates when it came under fire.

Indian authorities insisted that their ship had acted against a pirate vessel which had threatened to attack the Tabar.

"We fired in self-defense and in response to firing upon our vessel. It was a pirate vessel in the international waters and its stance was aggressive," Commodore Nirad Sinha, a navy spokesman, told CNN. He said the ship the Tabar fired upon was laden with ammunition. Video Watch more about the piracy threat in the region »

Wicharn told reporters that the Ekawat Nava 5 was headed from Oman to Yemen to deliver fishing equipment when it was set upon by pirates off the Horn of Africa. The pirates were seizing control of the ship when the Tabar moved in, he said.

Wicharn said he learned the fate of his vessel from a Cambodian crew member who survived the gunfire and drifted in the ocean for six days before he was plucked to safety by a passing ship. The sailor was recovering in a hospital in Yemen, he said.

Wicharn said his ship made a distress call on November 18 as it was chased by pirates in two speedboats, but the connection was lost midway. The owners, Sirichai Fisheries, had not heard from the crew since then.

Later that evening, the Indian navy said it encountered a suspected pirate "mother vessel," with two speedboats in tow, about 285 nautical miles (525 km) southwest of the Omani port of Salalah. "Mother vessels" are often used as mobile bases to ferry pirates and smaller attack boats into deep water.

When the Tabar's crew hailed the ship and demanded it stop for inspection, the pirates threatened to destroy the Indian ship, the ministry reported.
Don't Miss

"Pirates were seen roaming on the upper deck of this vessel with guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. The vessel continued its threatening calls and subsequently fired upon INS Tabar," the ministry said. The Indian frigate returned fire, setting the pirate ship ablaze and setting off explosions on board, the statement said.

An international fleet has been patrolling the waters off the Horn of Africa in an effort to crack down on pirates based in largely lawless Somalia.

Pirates have attacked more than 90 vessels off East Africa so far this year, according to the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Center, which monitors piracy around the world, including a Saudi supertanker captured earlier this month.

The latest ship seized was a Yemeni freighter Adina taken last week with a crew of seven on board, including two Yemenis, two Panamanians and three Somalis, security sources in Yemen told CNN.

The government is in direct contact with officials in Somalia to work on rescuing the ship, for which the hijackers are asking for a $2 million ransom.

Pirates were in control of the ship. The pirates looked agressive to the Indian ship, possibly firing on it. The Indian ship hit it with the deck gun that caught ammunition on fire.

How are the indians in the wrong here ? Why did the ship have so much ammo on it ?

Could the ship have been smuggling weapons and thats why there was all the ammo on it? Or could the Indians have made up the explosions because they realized their fcuk up right after sinking, and not just today?

There is something that doesn't add up here.

One thing I don't get is, if this was a fishing boat getting captured and was fired by gatling rounds how did it blow up like that. Did the Indians fire cannon rounds at it or did it hit the fuel on broad?

==================================
Pirate Mother Ship or Thai Trawler?

[linked image]

A suspected pirate ship was sunk on Nov. 18 in the Gulf of Aden by the Indian Navy. The ship now appears to have been a Thai fishing trawler, according to a report. (Photo: Indian Defence Ministry, via Reuters)
As if things werent chaotic enough in the Gulf of Aden: a suspected pirate ship that was sunk last week by the Indian Navy now appears to have actually been a Thai fishing trawler, according to CNN, which cites the ships owner.

Last week, the Indian Navy reported that one of its warships, the INS Tabar, which had been deployed to the region to repulse the growing pirate threat, encountered a flotilla of three pirate vessels some 320 miles south west of the Omani coast. The Tabar fought a battle at sea, sinking one suspect vessel what it called the mother ship and forcing the pirates to abandon a second as they fled.

The sinking seemed to be an important blow against the pirates, most of whom are based in Somalia and who now roam across vast areas of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, attacking seemingly at will.

(A few days earlier, pirates had brazenly seized an enormous Saudi-owned supertanker, the Sirius Star, which remains at anchor off the coast of Somalia, close to a Ukrainian freighter loaded with tanks, artillery, grenade launchers and ammunition, which has been held hostage since late September.)

But it turns out now that the mother ship may not have been in pirate hands very long. According to the CNN report, the ship was the trawler Ekawat Nava 5, which had been headed from Oman to Yemen to deliver fishing equipment when it was attacked by pirates off the Horn of Africa, according to Wicharn Sirichaiekawat, owner of the Ekawat Nava 5. The pirates were still taking control of the ship when the Tabar moved in, he said.

Mr. Sirichaiekawat learned of his ships fate when a Cambodian crewman was found alive by a passing ship after he had been adrift in the gulf for six days. He had survived the gunfire from the Indian Navy and the sinking of the ship, and was taken to a hospital in Yemen, where he is recovering. Fourteen other sailors from the trawler were still missing and one was confirmed dead, the owner said.

With the situation in the waters off Somalia clearly out of control, warships from the United States, other NATO and European Union nations and Russia are also steaming into the area as part of a reinvigorated worldwide effort to crush the pirates.

The German press published unconfirmed reports on Tuesday that the German government is considering sending up to 1,400 troops to combat the Somali pirates.

Others in the German press compared the ardency with which the country is willing to tackle the pirates with its contribution to the war on terror in Afghanistan, where Berlin currently contributes about 3,500 troops to the war, according to Der Spiegel.

the indians are lying.

- they claimed this fishing boat to be mother ship.

i dough only gatling gun was used by the pathological lying indians. TNT explosion would have given every single crew instent death! but it seems to be fuel fire.

the thai fishing boat owner and the fishing boat survivor clamins that the pirates were about to take over the boat when IN came along and destroyed the wrong target.

as for the explosion.. its burning fuel..

check out this video its buring just like the thai boat.

Indian navy 'sank Thai trawler'

The owner of a Thai fishing trawler has said the Indian navy sank it off Somalia's coast last week after wrongly assuming it was a pirate "mother ship".

Wicharn Sirichaiekawat said the Indian frigate had attacked the Ekawat Nava 5 while it was being hijacked by pirates.

He said one of the crew had been found alive after six days in the Gulf of Aden, but that another 14 were missing.

The Indian navy has insisted the vessel fired in self-defence at a pirate ship which had been stacked with explosives.

Almost 40 ships have been seized by Somali pirates so far this year.

Earlier, the authorities in Yemen confirmed pirates had captured a cargo ship carrying building material off the country's coast. They said the pirates were demanding a ransom of $2m (£1.3m).

The latest incident came days after the Saudi oil tanker, Sirius Star, was hijacked. It was earlier moved further north up the Somali coast.

'Self-defence'

Mr Wicharn told reporters in Bangkok that the Ekawat Nava 5 had been headed from Oman to Yemen last Tuesday to deliver fishing equipment when it was approached by Somali pirates in two speed boats in the Gulf of Aden.

We fired in self-defence and in response to firing upon our vessel

Commodore Nirad Sinha

Indian Navy spokesman

The pirates were in the process of boarding the vessel and seizing control when the Indian navy frigate, the INS Tabar, sailed into view and demanded it stop for investigation, he added.

"The sunken ship which the Indian navy claimed was a 'mother ship' of pirates was not the 'mother ship' at all," he said.

"The pirates wanted to take our ship to Somalia."

Mr Wicharn said he had learnt the fate of his trawler from a Cambodian crew member who had survived the INS Tabar's bombardment and had been rescued by a passing ship after six days adrift in the Indian Ocean.

The sailor was now recovering in a hospital in Yemen, he said.

Later, an Indian navy spokesman insisted that the Tabar had fired only upon a pirate "mother ship" which had threatened it.

"We fired in self-defence and in response to firing upon our vessel. It was a pirate vessel in the international waters and its stance was aggressive," Commodore Nirad Sinha told CNN.

Following last week's incident, the Indian navy said in a statement that the Tabar had spotted a pirate vessel while patrolling 285 nautical miles (530km) south-west of Salalah, Oman. It said those on board had been armed with guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

When it demanded the vessel stop for investigation, the pirate ship had responded by threatening to "blow up the naval warship if it closed on her", the statement said.

The pirates then fired on the Tabar, after which the Indians retaliated and there was an explosion on the pirate vessel, which then sank, it added.
India is one of several countries currently patrolling the Gulf of Aden, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. France, India, South Korea, Russia, Spain, the US and Nato also have a presence in the region.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7749245.stm

It looks like the Indians get over hyped and shot back at the ship when fired by RPGs and/or bullets, should have used warning shots first. Doubt the pirates would have damage the Navy ship, with their small arms fire.

This is a good question.

I don't think Thais have the legal right to fish in Somalian waters? Not to mention that surely there is safer places to fish than off the coast of Somalia!!

While I believe this story that they were attacked by pirates, is possible that the Thai boat is not a simple fisihing boat. Won't surprise me if they was running some smuggling operation.

Let me get this straight. A Thai fishing trawling was being chased by pirates and radioing for help.

The Indian naval ship comes and in and sinks the trawler with its crew but loses the two speedboats full of pirates.

AND it left a survivor for six days in the water.

Sounds very professional to me! LOL

I guess they wanted everyone to die so there would be no one to contradict the Indian "victory." LOL

Actually no professional navy would leave a man in the water after sinking his ship.

Not even if the man were a pirate and especially not a member of a non-combatant vessel.

The captain of the Indian ship should be tried for manslaughter under maritime law.

It is true, if the trawler is in international waters, there is no limit to where it can or cannot go. A country's own economic zone doesn't go far into the ocean, only 200Km I believe, correct me if I'm wrong.

^^ You are right..

But a Thai registered trawler, fishing near somalia (Fully knowing of the somali pirate threat.. everyone knows that in the shipping industry anyway) is very fishyy..

More fishyy..is that you get hit and keep quiet for a week..!!!

One thing is for sure.. The Indian Navy will investigate this further and if any wrong is done.. corrective action will be taken..

It is far more fishy that an Indian vessel should be near Somalia and it just so happens to sink a "pirate mother ship."

One, pirates don't attack naval vessels.

Two, India has very little trade and has an extremely large and desperately poor population

Three, there are ton of Western and Middle Eastern warships in the region and this one Indian ship who doesn't belong in the region comes across pirates,

Everything about this Indian story is fishy.

FAR more fishy than a Thai trawler in Somali waters. There are Jap and Chinese fishing trawlers off Cali and Spain never mind Somalia. Fishing vessels go everywhere.

Actually, any ship can explode in that fashion, if their fuel tanks are ignited, especially if there are vapour in the tanks. The huge orange fireball is consistent with gas or fuel flamed explosions.

ADD: Explosions of munitions are such are never "spectacular" if you had seen them. They are ususally debris flying along with smoke and dust in those explosions, but usually no huge fireballs along with it.

Of course it would explode in that manner, fuel carried by a large long endurance trawler would create a large explosion if detonated unless you are so experienced with the matter that you can tell whether its a fuel or ammunition explosion just from crappy pictures on the internet......

Btw, ruptured fuel tanks would create huge explosions similar to how a FAE operates, the fuel vapours would mix with air and be detonated from friction. Do some research, read wikipedia or google fuel tank explosions in gas stations or something similar. Flames are results of unburnt fuel, and judging from the picture, there are huge amounts of unburnt fuel in the air when the explosion picture was taken.

^^ lets not change the topic to How different fuels explode..

A trawler owned by Thai, was fishing near priate infested Somalian waters (10000 Km from Thailand) and got hit by the indian warship..

Since we dont know the answers..So lets ask the questions..!!

1) Would you, as an owner send your trawler to fish near known pirate infested waters ?..
2) IS Somali waters the richest fishing gound in the world?

Continue from here..

A simple quick internet check brings this:
"According to the CNN report, the ship was the trawler Ekawat Nava 5, which had been headed from Oman to Yemen to deliver fishing equipment when it was attacked by pirates off the Horn of Africa, according to Wicharn Sirichaiekawat, owner of the Ekawat Nava 5."

Trawler fishing boats fish nearly everywhere in the oceans, from the arctic to the antarctic. If there are fish, there are fishing boats, no matter what nation they are from. A few days ago a Chinese trawler was hit by pirates as well. At anytime there maybe tens of ocean-trawlers fishing in, near or trasiting through Somali waters, either to their fishing grounds or back to port.

Deepinwilderness wished to show pictures that show explosions from ammunition, I debated his post with facts.

World's fishing reserves are running low, the fishing industry is going further and growing more desperate to maintain their catches and some might even go as far as Somali. The fishing industry like any other industry is driven by profit, if they can make a buck there, they will be there.

Somali pirates only made major impact in the media this year and has expanded its operating area drastically this year, farrrr off the waters of Somali and into international waters once thought safe.

Oman to yemen..the best and safest route is along the coast line of oman/ yemen (Look at the map).

3) Why is this vessel, delivering fishing equipment, so far from Oman/ Yemen coastline.. and so near Somalia?

Continue to ask the questions..!!!

There are also restrictions placed on what routes certain ships can follow, unless your an American CBG you can't just go into any nations waters, just like how long range flights never fly straight lines. Maybe Yemen or Oman prohibits certain routes or it is more economically efficient to use the route that it was on when it was blown up.

*After checking the map, the ship was MUCH closer to Yemen than to Somalia.

So by your logic, you have placed the blame on that the trawler shouldn't have been there rather than the Indian navy shouldn't have blown them up into smithereens.

Thailand seeks clarification from India on sinking of "pirate" ship
Africa News

Nov 26, 2008, 4:05 GMT

Bangkok - Thailand has sought a clarification from the Indian Navy on its rules of engagement in sinking an alleged pirate ship last week off the coast of Somalia after evidence has emerged that the ship was a Thai vessel, officials said Wednesday.

'We have asked the Indian authorities to help us verify the ownership of the vessel and then clarify their rules of engagement,' said Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Tharit Charungvat.

International Maritime Bureau official says Indian navy has sunk a Thai trawler not a "pirate" boat.

Official: Indian navy mistakenly sank Thai trawler

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) A maritime official says a ship sunk by the Indian navy last week near Somalia was a Thai fishing trawler, not a pirate boat as originally reported.

Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau says one Thai crew member died when the Indian ship fired on the boat in the Gulf of Aden on Nov. 18. He says 14 other crew members remain missing while a Cambodian sailor was rescued four days later by passing fishermen.

Choong said Wednesday that the IMB received a report on the apparent mistake late Tuesday from Bangkok-based Sirichai Fisheries, which owned the Ekawat Nava5 vessel.

India's navy last week said its frigate INS Tabar battled a pirate "mother vessel" in the gulf, setting the ship ablaze.

Indian Navy denies INS Tabar sunk Thai trawler

[linked image]
INS Tabar fought with a pirate 'mother vessel' in the Gulf of Aden on Nov 18, setting the ship afire leaving it to sink.

New Delhi : The Indian Navy has denied claims that its warship sunk a Thai deep sea fishing trawler mistaking it to be a pirate mothership. The Navy has maintained that it fired on the vessel in self-defence after coming under attack.
The Navy said there was ample proof that the sunken vessel had pirates on board and armed bandits were seen roaming on the bridge.

A Thailand-based fishing company has claimed that the pirate 'mother ship' the Indian Navy destroyed in the Gulf of Aden last week was one of its deep sea fishing trawlers and was being hijacked by pirates when it was blown up by INS Tabar.

The Navy was flooded with queries after Wicharn Sirichaiekawat, manager of Bangkok-based Sirichai Fisheries, told local reporters that the warship hit the companys Ekawat Nava 5 vessel which was being chased and attacked by pirates. He said a crew member was dead and 14 were still missing.

Sirichaiekawat said the incident came to light after one of the crew members who survived the battle between the Indian Navy and the pirates was rescued by a passing vessel and dropped off at Yemen. The company had earlier reported that one of its fishing vessels went missing in the Gulf of Aden on November 18, the day the Indian Navy destroyed a pirate vessel.

Let's face it, the only reason that an Indian ship was near Somalia is because India wanted to show the world it was strong and not poor and ignored.

India has very little trade with the outside world except for English language office outsourcing. There is absolutely no reason for India to be in the area.

So what does the Indian navy do to make the world see India as a "power"? It sank a fishing boat.

Any other navy in the region would have dragged the survivors out of the water and if they were pirates, arrested them.

But instead of rescuing the survivors from the water, the India Navy hoped that they all died so no one could tell what happened.

Unfortunately for the Indian, one of the crew members survived.

This is the mark of a poor, badly-trained and malnourished navy that is hungry for world attention.

LOL. Everyone across Asia is listening.

And pissed off.

Sinking and killing Thais might not be a big deal for Indians who has no trade with ASEAN and whose main purpose in the whole event is to show off to the world that it isn't poor and geo-politically irrelevant.

But for the nations of the region, the thought of some blacks from India murdering 15 Asian crewmen and leaving survivors to the ocean will cause more than a little attention. LOL

Besides, the world maritime officials are saying that the boat sunk was a Thai trawler. And the Thai government is involved. LOL

The fact that remains is the Thai crawler was much closer to Yemen than Somalia and it was delivering its fishing equipment using the closest route as Ace said, if you check the map you can see that it was sunk pretty darn close to its destination close to the coast of Yemen, thus the Indian navy had a royal phuck up.

There is currently no evidence that there were any pirates or armed combatants onboard the trawler and even if there were, you can't seriously think that a couple guys with RPGs are gonna blow up a brand spanking new Russian frigate armed to the teeth with the latest RUssky guns and missiles. Whoever ordered the firing over reacted big time especially when you could steer away from the trawler for a couple of hundred metres and negate the threat of RPGs.

Deepinwilderness, I take offense that you use a racist and derogatory term towards orientals, I would like you to stop. Hawkssss did not use any term similar to your "pee coloured".

Its pretty easy to fit in the pieces guys...the article basically covered almost all.

Thai trawling ship was hijacked but moments before it was overran, it did radioed an emergency. However it was cut off.

Indian ship chances upon thai hijacked ship and contacted said ship. Received no response. Observed several armed men on board (ship was still being hijacked, obviously). They obviously then concluded that it was a pirate mother ship, based on said observances and the 2 accompanying speed boats. Perhaps they were too hasty?

Armed pirates, not willing to let go of their "catch", fired a few rounds at Indian ship (no evidence except for Indian Nay report). If they really did fire on the INS Tabar, its probably more of a deterrence rather than anything. Somali's arent exactly the most brilliant military experts but they are obviously not stupid or else they won't be such a menace that even a NATO-led fleet are having problems trying to control the situation.

Indian ship, upon being fired upon, decided to take action. Fired on-board guns. They MAY or MAY NOT have over-reacted but somehow, they hit something that basically blew up the Thai ship. Ammo rounds or gas tanks. who knows.

The end.

However, some questions remained.

1) The Thai ship did conduct a radio call for urgent aid. I'm not sure who was in-charge of the area but why wasn't the INS Tabar informed of the call before-hand, seeing that it was evidently the closest armed ship in the area? Or was the INS tabar already informed beforehand, thats why it was there to intercept?

2) Having blown up the Thai ship, INS Tabar apparently did not look for survivors. Or did they?

TBH, it loks like it was a major screw-up on ALL levels, not just the INS Tabar.

Why didn't the ship search for survivors, that is not very professional and it looks like they were going to kill everyone.

I believe it was the Indian's Navy fault for this major screw up, why didn't they consider they would have hit the fuel on board when they fired at the hull; vey unprofessional.

the real final result is that 1 Thai fisherman is dead, 14 others are missing for 6 days presumed dead when they could have lived. So this is not the end of the story.

The real final result is that a warship fired on an IN vessel, got blown up to smithereens. I couldn't care less if thais were aboard it or forearms.

And

ONG KONG: The ship that was blasted out of the water by the Indian navy in the Gulf of Aden last week was not a pirate vessel but a Thai fishing trawler that had been seized by pirates earlier the day, the boat's owner said Wednesday.

The trawler, the Ekawat Nava 5, with a crew of 16, was hijacked on the morning of Nov. 18, according to Wicharn Sirichaiekawat, the managing director of Sirichai Fisheries, which owns the boat.

The boat had a tracking device on board, Wicharn said in a phone interview from Bangkok, and the company immediately reported the hijacking and the boat's location to the International Maritime Bureau in Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia, the clearinghouse for reports of piracy.

The bureau broadcast the news of the hijacking to various ports, other ships in the area and the coalition of navies that helps maintain a maritime security corridor in the gulf.

"We got the report and sent out the information," said Noel Choong, head of the piracy reporting center. "The Thai company did the correct thing."

A British Navy ship then approached the Ekawat Nava 5, but the pirates "brought out our crew and used them as human shields," Wicharn said.

The warship backed away, he said.which warship was this ? Why was this not reported ?

"They said they couldn't do anything because they feared for the safety of the crew."

About 7 p.m., with darkness closing in, the Indian warship Tabar, which had been escorting Indian merchant ships in the gulf, approached the Ekawat Nava 5. The Tabar demanded that she stop to be investigated.

"This vessel was similar in description to the 'mother vessel' mentioned in various piracy bulletins," the Indian Navy said in a statement.

"Mother ships" are oceangoing boats, often large fishing trawlers, that tow or carry speedboats. These faster and more nimble boats are then deployed to overtake, attack and hijack commercial vessels, which are then held for ransom.

The pirates said they would blow up the Tabar if it approached any closer, and the navy statement said pirates with rocket-propelled grenade launchers were seen on deck.

Then, the navy said, the Tabar was fired upon.

The Indian ship returned fire, resulting in explosions on board the fishing boat. Two speedboats then broke away from the burning trawler, the navy said, as the pirates tried to escape.

One of the speedboats was later found abandoned, and the other escaped entirely.

Of the 16-man fishing crew, only one has been found - a Cambodian seaman who was picked up by Yemeni fishermen. The man, holding onto a metal barrel, had drifted for five days and 100 miles. He is recuperating in Yemen "and still very frightened," Wicharn said.

"We're still looking for the rest of the crew," said Wicharn, who added that the crew members' lives were insured but he carried no insurance on the vessel itself. He put the value of the boat at $500,000.

"The survivor saw some of the crew jump into the sea, although six or seven had been shot dead from the very beginning."

Wicharn said his crewmen, according to the survivor, had been shot by the Indian boat, not the pirates. The fishing captain apparently had been shot in the legs.

The Thai company has asked Yemeni officials to spread the word to harbormasters and fishing captains to be on the lookout for "bodies or surviving crew."

"We're looking for some king of responsibility now from India, something," he said, adding that foreign ministry officials and diplomats from both countries were talking about the incident.

"The Indians claim we were a pirate ship," Wicharn said. "They say they have pictures, and we've asked them to show them. Maybe there's some misunderstanding."

Choong, of the piracy reporting center, said the issue had become "very sensitive because the governments are involved, and it involves warships and crew safety."

"'I can understand both sides, and why the Indians fired," he said. "When they look at a boat with pirates on board and heavily armed, they think it's a mother ship and they want to stop it."

Again

he carried no insurance on the vessel itself. He put the value of the boat at $500,000.

Seriously, as much as we enjoy the attention of our Pakistani, Chinese and Turkish (what is up with them?) friends, I am genuinely worried about their round the clock obsession and hatred for India, for their own sakes. happy.gif
Firstly, nobody would want to leave this world with the sudden realization of truth that they have just wasted their entire life doing nothing but obsessing and hating India (or any other country for that matter); we are not that important.
Secondly, it just gives us a big head.wink.gif
So, while we love your attention, our heart bleeds seeing you wasting your life on us.
Just go out, exercise....do anything; we should not be the center of your universe.

Looking at this, the Indian ship was in the wrong here. First they got over hype up over the pirate 'attack', then it shot at the hull where the fuel is stored and afterwards they didn't bother to look for suvivours.

The UK ship did better.

"You can't say that, you are meant to hate UK as much, if not more.

Now come on, it was a much "cleaner" operation whatever the truth about the mysterious "Thai Trawler" is, don't you think.

U.K.'s Royal Navy Chases Somali Pirates, Killing Two
By Caroline Alexander

Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) -- British Royal Navy commandos gave chase to suspected pirates off the coast of Yemen, killing two of them in an ensuing gunfight.

The HMS Cumberland was on a routine patrol in the Gulf of Aden on Nov. 11 when it spotted a Yemeni registered fishing boat, or dhow, positively identified in a hijacking attempt on a Danish cargo ship, the MV Powerful, earlier in the day, the U.K.'s Ministry of Defense said in a statement late yesterday.

After ``non forcible methods'' to stop the dhow failed, the Royal Navy launched small assault craft to encircle the vessel, the MoD said. The pirates opened fire and the Navy fired back in self defense, according to the statement.

Two foreign nationals, believed to be Somali, were shot and killed, the MoD said. A Yemeni was found injured and died later. He received emergency treatment from Cumberland's doctor, the MoD said, though it wasn't clear whether his injuries were due to the firefight or to a previous incident, it added.

Pirate attacks increased fivefold in the Gulf of Aden, between Somalia and Yemen, in the first nine months of this year, as ransom payments spurred raiders to step up their activities, according to the International Maritime Bureau. At least 60 boats have been attacked and more than 12 vessels and 259 crew members remain hostage.

The European Union this week dispatched an anti-piracy force to join NATO and at least three other countries, including Russia, that have sent naval vessels to the region.

Pirates Surrender

After the gun battle, members of the British frigate boarded the wooden dhow, whose crew ``subsequently surrendered and a compliant boarding followed,'' according to the MoD. The last time the Royal Navy was in an armed confrontation was when Iran seized 15 U.K. sailors and Marines inspecting merchant ships in Iraqi waters in March 2007.

The boarding of the dhow was conducted ``in accordance with U.K. rules of engagement,'' the MoD said, which allows the Navy to intervene when suspected pirates are identified. As with all shooting incidents, ``a post-shooting incident investigation is currently being conducted, it added.

The Russian Navy said a helicopter from its own frigate, Neustrashimy, helped rescue the Danish vessel though an MoD spokesman said it didn't play a role in the shoot out.

Cumberland, a Plymouth-based Type 22 frigate with anti- surface, anti-submarine and anti-aircraft weapons systems, is part of the NATO maritime force. About 11 percent of the world's seaborne petroleum, on its way to the Suez Canal or regional refineries, passes through the Gulf of Aden.

Not, really, to be honest; I just don't see any parallels.
Considering that two people were killed, it is almost a botched up operation.
Now, before this pirate mother ship incident; Indian MARCOS rescued a ship without any casualty at all.
That is a comparable and clean operation.

"Considering that two people were killed, it is almost a botched up operation."

So if this apparent mistake by the Indian Navy had never come to light would you have still thought that having to take lives in order to take a pirate vessel was a sign of a botched operation, i don't think so.

Three people were killed because they fired on the boarding party with small arms and the boarding party returned fire using small arms, a proportionate response, that can hardly be described as a botched operation on the part of the RN, on the part of the pirates yes but not the RN. The end result was some killed, some captured and the pirate vessel taken, pretty clean IMO.

I am not really sure what your argument is.
You can not, in general, just juxtapose two different situations even when they are quite similar and you are here comparing two incidents which are not only prima facie but also entirely different in their nature.
This is meaningless.
I, like most, didn't notice the British incident and unless I am aware of precise details; I would refrain from commenting; let alone comparing, on it. That would be just foolish.
But my common sense tells me that once a potential deadly enemy has been identified, specialist forces tend to avoid putting their lives and of those around them in danger; it could lead to embarrassing situation; which I must say British special forces have been having more than their fair share of in last few years (remember Iran capture, Mexico cave incident etc).
But as I said I don't know the details so I would reserve my judgment on the British incident; that, IMHO, is the sensible thing to do.
You, on the other hand, are comparing a firefight with the potential scenario of a frigate being blown up by RPGs.
That is not sensible; you should know better.
These are different situations requiring different reactions.

I think this incident hinges on did the Indian navy vessel received the distress call from the Thai trawler? or was it a chance encounter?

Since the Indian vessel was a warship it would have had powerful radars and communication equipment on board, and if it had picked up the distress call from the Thai trawler then it could possibly have pinpointed where the trawler was. We don't know how much information was relayed in the distress call by the Thai trawler before the connection was lost, but most likely there were SOS or other emergency signals followed by its navigational position, these would have been given first before any description of its plight. I'm sure there are maritime communication channels dedicated for emergencies so other ships will instantly know its a distress call (perhaps others more knowledgable on this subject can enlighten me).

The implication is, if the Indian warship had received the distress call and know the Thai trawler's position! then it would have known that the trawler was unlikely to be a pirate mother ship and there would have been innocent hostages on board. Therefore the Indian warship should have made a more comprehensive assessment of the situation first, before going gung ho with all guns blazing!!

Panda made a good point, why didn't the Indian ship tried to seek and pick up any survivors? There could have been innocent hostages in the water, also any pirates rescued could have been handed over to the proper authorities for interrogation. Also what happened to the two speedboats?? Did the pirates got away before the trigger happy Indians opened fire??

Of course, it could have been just a chance encounter (unlikely but possible) which explains some of the things that happened, however there are still some lingering doubts. Guess we'll have to wait for more info to be revealed.

However if it does subsequently uncover that the Indians were simply trigger happy with their Russian guns then I'm sure all merchant and fishing vessels in future will pray they encounter pirates first before the Indian navy, it least with pirates they can bargain with them, and their ship won't instantly end up on the bottom of the ocean along with the crew!!

""You can not, in general, just juxtapose two different situations even when they are quite similar and you are here comparing two incidents which are not only prima facie but also entirely different in their nature.""

These are both incidents that involved a Naval frigate intercepting a pirate vessel or vessels, according to the Indians they both involved the frigate or their boarding parties being fired upon (however the fact that the Indian vessels was fired on by anything let alone an RPG is clearly in doubt now), they both involved a frigates or a frigates boarding parties returning fire and they both involved loss of life on the target vessel.

Exactly how much more alike do they have to be to be considered similar situations by you.

""But my common sense tells me that once a potential deadly enemy has been identified, specialist forces tend to avoid putting their lives and of those around them in danger; it could lead to embarrassing situation; which I must say British special forces have been having more than their fair share of in last few years (remember Iran capture, Mexico cave incident etc).""

There you go, now you're talking about completely different situations.

Naval and Royal Marine personnel are not "special forces".

""You, on the other hand, are comparing a firefight with the potential scenario of a frigate being blown up by RPGs.""

Or not as the case may be. There's now some doubt if the Indian vessel was actually fired upon at all, or at least if it was fired upon by this vessel and not one of the two smaller boats alongside her. However to give you the benefit of the doubt lets assume that she was fired upon from this hijacked Thai vessel that still had the original crew on board, do you really think that in those circumstances it was the correct response to destroy the vessel and thus kill the hostages.

Although I don't agree with such a disproportionate response and the lack of S&R after the ship sank, what do you think any other nation would have done if they were fired upon by what they thought to be a pirate ship?

One person mentioned going out of range of their weapons (which only consisted of small arms) but then what?

I just noticed this article posted by Wootness, I think it explains it all, LOL

The Thai fishing trawler had a TRACKING DEVICE, the trawler's LOCATION and hijacking was immediately reported to the INTERNATIONAL MARITIME BUREAU.

The bureau broadcast the news of the hijacking to PORTS AND OTHER SHIPS IN THE AREA, AND THE COALITION OF NAVIES THAT MAINTAIN SECURITY IN THE GULF WAS INFORMED!!

Heck, it seems just about everyone was informed about the hijacking of the Thai fishing boat, yet the Indian navy still manage to send the trawler to the bottom of the sea along with most of the crew!(RIP) WTF?

Also note the difference in approach in dealing with hijack of the trawler between the British warship and the Indian warship!!

Like I said, if it does subsequently uncover that the Indians were simply trigger happy with their Russian guns then I'm sure all merchant and fishing vessels in future will pray they encounter pirates instead of the Indian navy, it least with pirates they can bargain with them, and their ship won't instantly end up on the bottom of the ocean along with the crew!! Indian navy sank Thai trawler, not pirate ship, owner says

By Mark McDonald Published: November 26, 2008

HONG KONG: The ship that was blasted out of the water by the Indian navy in the Gulf of Aden last week was not a pirate vessel but a Thai fishing trawler that had been seized by pirates earlier the day, the boat's owner said Wednesday.

The trawler, the Ekawat Nava 5, with a crew of 16, was hijacked on the morning of Nov. 18, according to Wicharn Sirichaiekawat, the managing director of Sirichai Fisheries, which owns the boat.

They did? Really?

This The International Maritime Bureau, a specialised department of the non-profit International Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the Navys aggressive action. It is exactly the kind of action we need against the Somali pirates, who have so far been operating with impunity on this major international water route. For the International Maritime Bureau this is a significant development at times like these and we congratulate the Indian Navy for this robust action, said IMB (India) chief, Capt Pottengal Mukundan.

Is what the maritime bureau said right after the ship had been sunk. They themselves had no clue, just like you about what is going on here.

They already did. Every single link I've spotted says they saw pirates with RPG's and machinegunes..

ndians are trying to cover up their mess by saying that they were under attack?

Could well be the truth. Were you there on the pirate ship or the Tabar? Or were you just picking lint out of your ass like you always do?

The same Neil choong congratulating the IN about the sinking..

If all warships do this, it will be a strong deterrent. But if it's just a rare case, then it won't work," Noel Choong, who heads the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, told Associated Press.

The Indian Navy has denied claims that its warship sunk a Thai deep sea fishing trawler mistaking it to be a pirate mothership. The Navy has maintained that it fired on the vessel in self-defence after coming under attack.

The Navy said there was ample proof that the sunken vessel had pirates on board and armed bandits were seen roaming on the bridge.

They did? Really?

Well dude thats what it said in the article that was initially posted by you

Here it is again:

http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/11/26/asia/26PIRATE.php
excerpt
"The boat had a tracking device on board, Wicharn said in a phone interview from Bangkok, and the company immediately reported the hijacking and the boat's location to the International Maritime Bureau in Kuala Lumpur, Malayasia, the clearinghouse for reports of piracy.

The bureau broadcast the news of the hijacking to various ports, other ships in the area and the coalition of navies that helps maintain a maritime security corridor in the gulf."

Is what the maritime bureau said right after the ship had been sunk. They themselves had no clue, just like you about what is going on here.

Of course IMB wouldn't have known the full circumstances at that time, especially almost straight after reports of the sinking of the ship, because piracy is rife in that area and as far as the IMB is concerned it could have been a genuine pirate mother ship that was sunk by the IN.

But whats important is did the Indian warship received broadcasts from the IMB about the hijack of the Thai fishing trawler?? If they did, then they would have known the NAME OF THE VESSEL and its general position!

Guess we will have to wait for further revelations

And you were planning to spot it out in the NIGHT? Theres no street lamp here. Or are you just retarded?

LOL, dude if was in total darkness then how did the Indians managed to see pirates on board with RPGs and machine guns?? Also the Indians said their ship was in danger when it came under fire from the machine guns (probably AK47s) and RPGs, so the Indian warship must have been FREAKING DARN CLOSE TO THE TRAWLER RIGHT?? LOL

Also all warships are equipped with "search lights" and these would have been used by the Indian warship initially to try to ID the fishing boat, which is why they managed to see the pirates on board armed with guns and RPGs!! Which begs the question if the Indians could see pirates with guns on board the ship then why can't they see the name of the ship PAINTED IN BIG BRIGHT LETTERS??

The trawlers are not taken by pirates for ransom. The only reason they would hijack it so that they can be used as a mother ship. Anyway the IN did exactly what it was supposed to do when it was threatened to be blown period.

Of course IMB wouldn't have known the full circumstances at that time, especially almost straight after reports of the sinking of the ship, because piracy is rife in that area and as far as the IMB is concerned it could have been a genuine pirate mother ship that was sunk by the IN.

So maybe this is a pirate ship that has been sunk. In any case, it was a ship under control of pirates that attacked our frigate. They met a response they were not expecting. But then again ,we're not operating under UN or EU or American rules. We are protecting OUR interests and we can do what we want.

so the Indian warship must have been FREAKING DARN CLOSE TO THE TRAWLER RIGHT?? LOL

An AK or an RPG round can be fired from a lot farther than the distance a human eye can see a nameplate.

And even if they did spot the nameplate, so what? Pirate motherships don't exactly come out with "Pirate mothership" written on their sides. And if the IMB failed to notify all the warships, its their fault. Their head himself did not know about the incident and was praising it the next day, surely it doesnt take much to inform their HEAD.

Which begs the question if the Indians could see pirates with guns on board the ship

If you get fired at from a ship, theres a good chance theres people on the ship firing at you. Now they wouldn't fire from inside would they?

Guess we will have to wait for further revelations

Thats all I'm trying to tell the people here. Too much confusion atm, lets wait till we jump to conclusions?

Why shouldn't they? If tommorow an Indian fisherman fires on a PN vessel would you say that your vessel should have turned tail and fled?
