In two polls this month, more people wanted China's first aircraft carrier to be named after the controversial leader than any other option.
By Peter Ford | Staff writer 06.22.09
Its funny how talk about a ships name can reveal unusual things about the people doing the talking.
In this case it is Chinese Internet users talking about Chinas aircraft carrier. Or, rather, Chinas putative aircraft carrier because it has not been built yet, nor have the authorities yet even acknowledged plans to build one.
But that has not stopped Internet portals here from doing a bit of wishful thinking, and inviting visitors to their sites to have their say. And a rather disturbing say it is, too, even if the polling samples are small.
Neutral names, such as Beijing or Shanghai, dont appeal to people at all. More popular are the names of islands, such as Taiwan, Diaoyu, or Nansha.
This is awkward, though, because what they all have in common is that they are disputed territory. Taiwan is de facto independent, Diaoyu is known as Senkaku in Japan, and Nansha is better known as the Spratlys, a sprinkle of islands claimed not only by China, but also the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei.
On the other hand, naming an aircraft carrier which would be the jewel of Chinas naval crown for a disputed island fits well with the general principles that respondents to the polls thought should guide the choice.
Thirty percent thought the name should present Chinas comprehensive national strength. Only 6.9 percent wanted to avoid the impression of a military threat.
But which was the runaway favorite in two polls conducted earlier this month? Mao Zedong.
He may have been a monster to you and me. The number of Chinese who died as a result of his policies runs into the tens of millions. But to many, if not most people here, Mao remains for all his faults, even when they are admitted the father of the nation; his memory is endowed with supernatural powers.
Indeed, his name alone has deterrent force, believe some of the respondents, according to the International Herald Leader, a daily paper owned by the official Xinhua news agency, which commissioned one of the polls.
But there could be a drawback. Aircraft carriers are used in battle, and they could get damaged, the Herald Leader points out. If that happened to a carrier named Mao Zedong, it might hurt ordinary peoples feelings.

US likes to name carriers after former dead presidents, so how is this odd. Better than naming it Jackie Chan, which is equivalent to naming a carrier USS Paris Hilton lol.

I would think Zheng He would be a better name, but, of course, I am not Chinese. As I understand it, Chairman Mao was afraid of water, even enough for normal bathing.

"Korea has not been the only battle ground since the end of the Second World War. Men have fought and died in Malaya, in Greece, in the Philippines, in Algeria and Cuba, and Cyprus and almost continuously on the Indo-Chinese Peninsula. No nuclear weapons have been fired. No massive nuclear retaliation has been considered appropriate. This is another type of war, new in its intensity, ancient in its origin--war by guerrillas, subversives, insurgents, assassins, war by ambush instead of by combat; by infiltration, instead of aggression, seeking victory by eroding and exhausting the enemy instead of engaging him. It is a form of warfare uniquely adapted to what has been strangely called 'wars of liberation,' to undermine the efforts of new and poor countries to maintain the freedom that they have finally achieved. It preys on economic unrest and ethnic conflicts. It requires in those situations where we must counter it, and these are the kinds of challenges that will be before us in the next decade if freedom is to be saved, a whole new kind of strategy, a wholly different kind of force, and therefore a new and wholly different kind of military training."-President Kennedy's Address at Graduation Exercises of the U.S. Military Academy, 1962

I would imagine there are large number of Americans that would prefer the USS Paris Hilton to the USS George W. Bush (which is probably guaranteed in the near future), certainly she has caused less damage to the US and their servicemen.

Zheng He would be a great fit, he's held in high regards and a national hero. More suitable than Mao. Although Mao was definitely not afraid of water, quite the opposite. He made several public swims in the yangtze river even into his 70s.
Zheng He would never fly. He was Muslim, ie Hui, and an eunuch.
You are probably thinking of Uighurs in northwestern China. Uighurs are central asian muslim turks who want autonomy. Hui are just han chinese who practice Islam and they live all over eastern China, there's no animosity with Huis.
As for eunuchs, there's no bias against them by historians, although they do tend to get painted as corrupt in popular media. How else does men without balls compensate lol.

What I am saying is that the Chinese government would go with something else before they went with Zheng He. I would approve of naming the ship Zheng He but alas that does seem unlikely.

There are some many other historical Chinese figures to choose from......

Because it is just a matter of time until we stop buying that poor quality chinese ****e. It's beginning to happen now. When we stop buying your cheap, worthless, crap what will China do then? That is why I say china is no threat. Everything china builds is junk. China builds nothing that is good quality, nothing. Corporations build ****e in china because china is cheap junk. Nobody buys anything of Chinese origin if they want good quality products.
Iran is buying chinese ****e because that is all they can get. It is not as though they have a choice.

Of course you do not see it happening. That would require you to have an original thought. Nobody in china can think outside the box, which is why you copy everything you make.
Thankfully this economic crisis will make First World nations become more protectionist. That will not help the makers of poor quality chinese junk.

Actually, the most historically proper name will be Koxinga, the only historical chinese admiral that has led successful naval action against Western powers plus it adds the the historical implication of retaking Taiwan.
Or the chinese can use the name sake of the two ironclad battleships that fought in the first sino-japanese war, "ding-yaun" or "zhen-yuan"
