Turkey will sign an agreement Thursday with Germany to jointly build six submarines for the Turkish Naval Forces, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The deal covers six Class-214 air-independent propulsion submarines for the Turkish Naval Forces and will significantly improve the navy's capability to undertake longer underwater operations, the report cited a statement by the German embassy in Ankara as saying.

The Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW), which is part of the German ship-building giant Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems, and Turkey's Golcuk Naval Shipyard based in the Kocaeli Province will participate in the production, said the report.

It didn't disclose financial details, but quoted Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul as saying that Turkish industrial participation in the project would be worth around 80 percent of the total value of the deal.

The HDW will preassemble structural and mechanical parts of the submarines, or classified elements such as the fuel cells and propulsion systems, in Germany and then ship them to Turkey, according to the report.

All electronic and weapon systems, including sensor, communications, and data processing systems, will be designed and produced by the Turkish side.

Senior Turkish and German government officials and naval forces commanders will attend the signing ceremony scheduled on Thursday, said the report.

Turkey will produce U-214TN's with vertical contruction technology..

so basically its a Turkish made submarine, using german guidelines/plans and propulsion system, while everything else is build by the Turkish naval industry. interesting. if its any good, they could make it under license? or highly modify it and sell it?

Only general design of U-214TN, AIP and Propulsion will be German-made (% 19 share). All another things will be Turkish indigenous systems including simulators, weapon systems, sonars, sensors,consols, command-control center, softwares, new generation CC center development rights...etc. Turkish National contribution will be %81...

You know Germans had placed an embargo on Turkey cause of stupid politic reasons but At last years, There will be something being changed.. After a strategic cooperation agreement have been signed between counterparts of two country cause of unknown reasons, Germany have removed all restrictions for German made weapons Which Turkey had ordered in past at every areas including using them against PKK terorism, Then, Aselsan and German institues developed long range jammer systems to integrate air vehicles to make blind enemy radars and electronic systems... After that, Germany started making pressure to French to make Turkey a partner of their UCAV project. Now, A great cooperation examples has been placed again between Turkey and Germany on U-214 submarine... I think Germany have not given those level offsets and national contribution permission to a country for a Germany product till now...

At least impressive,Turkey making 80% of the subsystems of such an advanced submarine.
