ISLAMABAD: France will provide Tiger combat helicopters and military equipment to Pakistan to enhance its capacity to fight terrorism.

This was stated by Admiral Edouard Guillaud, Military Personal Staff Adviser to French President, during a series of meetings he held here on Thursday with top political and military leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Tariq Majid and Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

Official sources said that helicopters to be provided by France would be equipped with ground-to-ground missiles with semi-active laser seekers with a range of over 8km.

The multi-role helicopters have modern avionics and radars and can be equipped with anti-tank missiles.

Admiral Guillaud commended Pakistans determination and resolute action to clear its soil of terrorists and eliminate extremism.

An official of the French embassy said the visit of the delegation led by Admiral Guillaud was a follow-up to French visits by President Asif Ali Zardari and Army Chief Gen Kayani.

The fight against terrorism is a key matter of concern for the international community. Within the framework of our common goal to fight terrorism, this visit aims at strengthening our bilateral cooperation in the field of defence and security, he said.

He said Frances objective was to offer political and military cooperation and support to Pakistani authorities and strengthen their fight against terrorism and extremism.

France wishes to contribute to regional security and stability through reinforced dialogue on these matters.

During the delegations meeting with President Zardari, the two sides decided to extend ties, especially in the field of defence, and the use of civilian nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Presidents spokesman Farhatullah Babar said that matters relating to Pak-France cooperation in different areas, the Friends of Pakistan initiative, rehabilitation of internally-displaced people and fight against militants were discussed at the meeting.

During his meeting with the delegation, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani called for a roadmap for pragmatic cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy.

He proposed establishment of a working group to work out a plan for nuclear cooperation.

Referring to the army operation against militants in Malakand division and tribal areas, the prime minister urged France and other countries to support Pakistan by providing military equipment and assistance to effectively deal with terrorists.

The prime minister warned against the possibility of militants crossing over into the Pakistani territory, particularly in Balochistan, in the wake of enhanced deployment of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan.

The prime minister thanked France for the assistance it pledged at the Democratic Friends of Pakistan meeting in Tokyo for the displaced people of NWFP and said that Pakistan was looking forward to the visit of President Sarkozy when frameworks on defence and security and counter-terrorism and on economic and energy cooperation would be signed.

Admiral Guillaud said he hoped the two sides would make progress in the field of trade and economy and in civilian nuclear energy cooperation during visit of French Secretary of State for Foreign Trades to Pakistan on July 20.

Admiral Guillaud also called on Gen Tariq Majid, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), at the Joint Staff Headquarters. Both leaders exchanged views on regional situation and discussed possible areas of expansion of defence and security cooperation.

Gen Majid thanked the government of France for its political support to Pakistan, approval of 12 million euros as initial humanitarian aid for displaced people of Swat and affirmation of assistance for capacity building of Pakistan forces.

Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani held separate meetings at the General Headquarters with Admiral Guillaud and Gen Stanley McChrystal, Commander of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), in Afghanistan.

For the last more then 20 years Pak was using Cobra. Now its discontinue and American not offering Apache anymore, before they did,but don't know why deal dissolve. But in FATA area best weapon is gunship and drones and Pak Army desperately need attack Helo. Cobra's fleet is in worst condition, because of daily operation, plus lack parts. US govt trying hard to locate and refurb Cobra for Pak army, but its taking forever. Thats the reason Pak has no choice to buy expensive birds from France.

Chinese attack helo is not mature and plus not in production yet,may be because engine problems. West put defence embargo on China, since then Canadian firm stop supplying helo engines, which were basically not for defence use anyway.
China must have special interest in French deal, because decades of defence product embargo. No exposure to Western technology.
Pakistan has huge fleet of French transport helos, which include Puma and many others...

Pathankot Strike
8 F-86Fs of No 19 Squadron led by Squadron Leader Sajjad Haider struck Pathankot airfield. With carefully positioned dives and selecting each individual aircraft in their protected pens for their strafing attacks, the strike elements completed a textbook operation against Pathankot. Wing Commander M G Tawab, flying one of the two Sabres as tied escorts overhead, counted 14 wrecks burning on the airfield. Among the aircraft destroyed on the ground were nearly all of the IAFs Soviet-supplied Mig-21s till then received, none of which were seen again during the War.

It seems these embargoes don't count as China gets a lot of stuff threw the Paki way.
France and other European nations know of this but don't mind much as long as their big brother doesn't get angry.

France has only 100% agreed to supply tigers to PAK..
France has to sell tigers before PAK buys them.
so far the rough estimate is 12 tigers.....

Attack helicopters are certainly one of the very best assets against talibans and I doubt Pakistan has the infrastructure to use killer drones

But there is the political aspect of selling weapons to a close ally of China.

You must buy the drone, then train the pilots of these drones, then have the bandwith
to control them etc etc

Nothing easy nor cheap in fact.
Well cheaper than Superhornet or Rafale, for sure happy.gif

Just to get things straight. A few month ago, Pakistan received a 6 billion$ last-minute emergency loan from the IMF to avoid certain bankruptcy... And now they are able to buy Franco-German state of the art gunships with a unit price of 45 - 50 million EUROS(incl. first pilot training)?
Not to mention the very expensive weapon systems for the Tiger(One German Pars 3 lr rocket costs about 600.000 per shot).
The much cheaper alternative rockets are the American Hellfire II(60.000$) and the old Franco-German HOT. Both are more than good enough for terrorist hunting and fit perfectely with the Cobra, which they already operate(Pilot and ground crew training plus maintenance advantage) and which is also much, much cheaper...
However.
Until the bill isn't paid and the Tigers aren't in Pakistan I would be careful about this deal... We sold so many stuff to Pakistan, Greece and otehr countries and in the end...well, still waiting for some money.

In Germany, because of strict laws, only to a "certain amount". You can keep track of nearly all big weapon deals in the past.
As it be submarines, Fighter jets or tanks. All the deals are(and have to be) well documented.

knowing zadari this deal will go ahead, but not due to it;s merits... there is nothing i see in the eurocopter that is worth paying the price

the cobras are battle proven, have been use in the Pak army since 1980s
they have flown a great number of anti taliban mission proved battle field survivable
and most of all enjoy the confidence of paki crews.

pakistan has more than 40 cobras in service. they r desperately needed as pakistan has launched major operations and every locaL commander needs them for cover. pakistan army has deployed 100k troops against talban and 40 copters will not cut it.

USA our incredibilily unreliable ally keeps making long speeches on "war on terrorism" but crucial equipment like cobras US has been incredibily slow to provide.

they make lame excuses that Ah-1 is no longer in production, but they can use thier common sence and transfer supercobras to us???....

dont worry i dont want to see the deal to go ahead, the tiger is lame for it;s price and unproven,. u can a F-16blk 52 for that (50 mil).

also your reference to 3rd world press, i would think again,Dawn is pakistan premier news reporting agency will a good reputation for honest.

i would be more worried if the news came from first world news agency... after all did u guys not report that iraq had MWD???? links with al qaida?????

indeed Pakistan should review its priorities, they are infact spending a IMF emergency loan to buy foreign
military products. The money will go straight back into the pockets of the west. Without having any positive
effect on the pakistani population, no job creation no health services.

Besides this there are far more (cost) effective ways to hunt down terrorist, one does not need
a multi-million helicopter guunship. A simple militarized Bell 206 will do the job as effective.

ISLAMABAD: France will provide Tiger combat helicopters and military equipment to Pakistan to enhance its capacity to fight terrorism.

This was stated by Admiral Edouard Guillaud...

The admiral said nowhere that France is going to "sell" Tigers. He said "provide some".
If the source is reliable that could also mean that some French Tigers will be allowed to intervene in cooperation with Pakistan forces if they can help (they probably can: because of its day and night vision means and its gun manly).

That makes more sens.
French Tigers will be in A'stan very soon anyway.

stabilize the economy in these tough times. Your government ****ed up and is still in the proces of ****ing up. You are the misinformed lil kid here, not by the media; but by your own government.

Today i bought a new car because my neighbour bought a new car yesterday. I can't really afford it;
i was almost declared bankrupt some time ago but thankfully i got this really cheap loan so i can go
on for some time. I could have spent the money on the education of my children, but i feel like having
a newer car than the neighbours is more important.

^^ Well smart alec.

When your country is so phucked up that they literally have to beg door to door for aid to survive, building an arsenal is the last thing on their mind.

When you give alms to a beggar you dont expect him to go to a high class 5 star restaurant to have his lunch/dinner. Whatever money these phuckistanis are getting is because of charity and they should use maximum resources to build their economy n not military.

But good for us though.

Final decision on this helo will be made with Sarkozy arrive Pakistan in Sept. But US has also offered Super Cobra rush delivery. But crew and tech need few months training before hand over these 14 super cobra.....need is extremely urgent according to Pakistan army. Only Euro is mature product in the market after Apache....

How can you say the Tiger is mature! There are only a handful in the world thus far!

When I was young I used to pray for a bike, then I realized that God doesn't work that way, so I stole a bike and prayed for forgiveness.

^^^here is the problem PA cobra's are over 20 years old, they have completed their life. But still flying and Pentagon is trying to located rusty cobras in different basis, which is taking forever. First locate and then refurbished those cobra. Need is urgent. This war on terror and terrain need atleast 100 gunships and in service right now only 40s Cobra, rest 30 for cannibalizing.

PEACE

You don't want to buy a"Mature" aircraft, in AdA service this means the type has cumulated 10.000 flying hours.

What he meant was technologicaly which is true because DGA programes aren't brought to production stage unless technologies used have passed their point of maturity.
