this wasnt the case even 2 years ago. They cut the draft term from 2 years to 1 and as a result they need to draft 2x more people every year so this means lowering standards. The move to a one year draft term was supposed to change things for the better. Conscripts no longer are expected to fight, its basically just a year of national service, they build roads, fix up hospitals and generally just do construction and support work for free for the "real army." The one year draft was also supposed to end the hazing problem, but the criminals are now robbing and murdering the normal conscripts making things the same as before. They literally beat one kid half to death and then hung him to make it look like a suicide. "They" found him in time, but the kid is now in a coma.
The draft in Russia is doomed long term. In a decade they will almost certainly end it outright.
