A dead pig tossed near a mosque site sparked rioting between Muslims and Hindus in southern India, leaving three dead and more than a dozen people injured.
Clashes between the warring groups broke out in the souther state of Mysore on Thursday after the pig-tossing incident, city police commissioner Sunil Agarwal told CNN.
"Some miscreants threw the carcass of a pig in the mosque. People gathered in large numbers and protested," a police official told the BBC.
A curfew has been ordered in the area, which has a large Muslim minority and a history of religious strife.
Mysore is a city in Karnataka, which is governed Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
