Qatar proposes gas pipeline to Turkey

Aug 27, 2009 at 05:03

Qatar, the worlds third-largest holder of natural gas, has proposed a gas pipeline to Turkey, possibly linking it with another supply route being created to transport energy from Central Asia to Europe, UAE daily the National reported on Thursday.

The newspaper said Qatar and Turkey are looking at the possibility of Qatar supplying gas to the Nabucco pipeline project, which will take gas from the former Soviet republics and Middle East to Europe bypassing Russia.

The European Union has an uneasy relationship with Russia over energy supplies with the latter using its vast oil and gas resources for political influence in Europe.

We are eager to have a gas pipeline from Qatar to Turkey We discussed this matter in the framework of cooperation in the field of energy, the newspaper quoted Qatar ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, citing Turkish press.

Sheikh Hamad visited Turkey last week and held talks with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Qatar has no new fields and virtually all their new supply is pledged to the US and not the EU. They dont have the reserves to spare, its empty talk. The only major new fields are in the CIS and Iraq.

Slovenia to sign South Stream agreement soon
27 August 2009 | 13:12 | Source: Tanjug
LJUBLJANA -- Slovenia is expected to sign the agreement for constructing a part of the South Stream gas pipeline on its territory soon, Prime Minister Borut Pahor said.

Pahor added that the details regarding the agreement will be confirmed soon at a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, according to Slovenian news agency STA.

A group of experts from the Russian Gazprom gas company and officials of the Russian energy ministry will be visiting Slovenia on Friday to meet with Slovenian Economy Ministry officials in order to finalize the taxation aspects of the agreement.

The South Stream pipeline will take Russian gas under the Black Sea, 900 kilometers through Bulgaria, Serbia and into other European countries.

The deadline for finishing the construction of the pipeline is said to be the end of 2015.

Romania ready to help with South Stream

BUCHAREST, Romania, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Though Romania has not received an invitation to take part in Russia's South Stream gas pipeline, Bucharest is ready to help with the project, officials say.

Romania lies along the route for the Nabucco gas pipeline, which Europe hopes will ease its energy dependence on Russia. A rival project, South Stream, would secure Russia's position in the southeastern European energy sector.

South Stream would bring around 1.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas from Central Asia and Russia along a route that includes Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia and Turkey. Romania may be included on a northern branch of the artery.

Adriean Videanu, the Romanian economic minister, said Bucharest was ready to help Russian partners with information and surveys on South Stream despite a lack of official invitations, Romania's Financiarul reports.

"For the moment, Romania is ready to supply the Russian side all the relevant data to help it complete its surveys, in accordance with all the international agreements Romania signed," he said.

He maintained, however, that the Nabucco gas pipeline is the top priority for the Romanian government.

"Romania doesn't reject any other project that will strengthen Romania's energy security," he said.

Turkmen President Visits Turkey To Discuss Nabucco

August 27, 2009

ANTALYA, Turkey -- Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov has begun a two-day visit to Turkey. He is meeting with Turkish President Abdullah Gul in Antalya province for talks expected to focus on energy issues and bilateral cooperation, RFE/RL's Turkmen Service reports.

The visit comes after Berdymukhammedov visited Sofia on August 26, also to discuss energy matters, including the Nabucco gas-pipeline project.

Bulgaria and Turkey, along with Austria, Hungary, and Romania, signed transit agreements for the Nabucco project in July.

EU officials hope Turkmenistan will contribute gas to the Nabucco project, which is designed to decrease the bloc's reliance upon Russian gas imports.

Turkmenistan and Turkey have extensive business ties. Turkish companies were among the first to start work in Turkmenistan following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

They include, especially, construction companies, which have won many of the Turkmen government's tenders for large projects.

Among those projects have been textile production factories to make textiles an increasingly important export sector.

"Qatar has no new fields and virtually all their new supply is pledged to the US and not the EU"

With the recent shale gas fines in the US, natural gas shipments from overseas is no longer necessary.  The US has reserves that will last them for decades now, even without Alaska.
