Up to 300-fold decrease in volume in comparison with conventional products, and about 70-fold decrease in weight along with a reduction in energy requirements of between ten and twenty percent, it is the long-term goals of this collaborative project.
U.S. has a need of miniaturized technology to the development of future micro-satellite systems. For the Swedish part of the cooperation aimed at long-term to support the Gripen's ongoing development of new technology beyond the 2020th
- A large number of systems in the Gripen will need to be replaced for various reasons. Certain technologies become obsolete and no longer manufactured. New systems that increase the technical capacity meant that we need to make room for more electronics in the platform. When miniaturization is a possible way to realize a technological innovation, "says Rickard Nordenberg, which together with Josette Rosengren-Calixte is responsible for the project at FMV.
U.S. has identified a company in Sweden, AAC Microtec, former Ångström Aerospace, which is considered the world leader in the development of miniaturization and standardization of electronics and able to pack them so that the weight and volume reduction of up to approximately 300 times of how today's technology looks .
The components will be developed in the standard Plug and Play, meaning that it produces a well defined interface between electronic components that can then be bolted on to the system. An everyday example of Plug and Play standard, the interfaces that we use every day in our office systems, mouse, printer and monitor.
