German Eurofighters Intercept Russian Antonov Over Baltic

NEWS BY ALENIA AERONAUTICA ON SEPTEMBER 24, 2009 AT 5:20 AM

eurofighter-typhoon_asraam.jpg&w=390&h=260&zc=0

Take-off in six minutes and intercept in 15. These are the short times elapsed from the first scramble of the Luftwaffe Eurofighters deployed to Lithuania.

The intercepted intruder was a Russian Antonov AN-72 twin-engine transport, obviously tasked with sounding the reaction of the NATO air defense organization over the Baltic. The AN-72 remained in the area for over 50 minutes, always closely monitored by the Eurofighters which flew equipped with MBDA Iris-T missiles.

The mission was flown by Jagdgeschwader 74, which has recently replaced a Czech Republic unit in the NATO duty of protecting the air space of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Eurofighters deployed to the Lithuanian base of Siauliai in late August and were declared operational on September 1.

In November they will hand over the duty to JG 71 Richthofen and its old McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom, continuing in the rotational logic which since April 2004 has seen 14 NATO countries provide aircraft. The task is likely to continue for several years, until the Baltic air forces can provide their own assets.
Italian Eurofighters perform a similar task for the air defence of Albania, another recent NATO member.

Actually the Germans just flew over to share their opinion on the best way to invade the Baltics.

True, but since the Germans don't have any mighty Spitfires, they will just have to settle for Typhoons wink.gif

Or perhaps some Typhoons? wink.gif

for the precisions and the additional pics of the TU-142. Is it just a brown bear or could it be an OREL?
The OREL should have an antenna on the vertical tail so maybe a 95MS Bear H to account for the lack of
bumps on the side.
OH! My! the Second pic is awesome.

those two planes were clearly there to gather ELINT. That An-72 was probably loaded with electronics.

Why don't the 3 Baltic states purchase one or 2 squadrons of fighter jets? Don't tell me all together they have not the means to buy 20something Gripens or F-16!!

The TU-95 was intercepted by an RAF Typhoon, note how it has no German markings on it?

I could be wrong but in the second picture of schlawa post.

The fighter ??.

Looks more like a Mirage 2000 than a Typhoon.

It is a M2000. Which is easy to understand since France had been in there on a previous rotation.

Add. info : M2000 RDI served on a four month rotation in the 3 baltic states in 2007.
Island, a founding member of OTAN/NATO, also does NOT have armed forces and is
defended the same way. In 2008, France deployed Mirage 2000-5 from Dijon air force base.
These intercepted two AN-95s on the ninth of June, so that might be it also.
