(CNN) -- President Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.
The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norweigan Nobel Committee for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."
The committee also said Obama has "created a new climate in international politics."
In his short time in office, Obama has acted on a wide range of issues from the economy to terrorism and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
This year's peace prize nominees included 172 people and 33 organizations. The committee does not release the names of the nominees.
Me think, China is behind this,,
Now china can attack Taiwan, or any other country and Obama will do nothing,, US presidents hands are now tied with the string of the Nobel Peace price,,!!!!

WARSAW: Poland's anti-communist leader and 1983 Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Walesa expressed surprise Friday that US President Barack Obama won
this year's award just months after taking office.
"Who, Obama? So fast? Too fast -- he hasn't had the time to do anything yet," Walesa told reporters in Warsaw where he was attending the funeral of Marek Edelman, the last surviving leader of the doomed 1943 Warsaw ghetto uprising against Nazi Germany.
"For the time being Obama's just making proposals. But sometimes the Nobel committee awards the prize to encourage responsible action," said Walesa.
"Let's give Obama a chance," Walesa, 65, who served five years as Poland's first democratically elected president after the collapse of communism in 1989.
Walesa himself won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 as the head of Poland's freedom fighting Solidarity trade union, the only independent trade union ever to exist in the entire communist bloc.
Under his leadership Solidarity undertook talks with the Poland's communist regime to negotiate a peaceful, bloodless end to communism in the country in 1989, a move which had a domino effect across the Soviet bloc, seeing its collapse in 1991.

Obama hasn't done anything.. His policies on Iraq and Afghanistan haven't changed. He hasn't "brought the troops home" yet from Iraq, and increased the number going to Afghanistan (which is a good thing). He supports military action against Iran.
How in the hell did he win the Peace prize of all things.

All nobel prizes (except the peace prize) are given for results, not rhetoric. I would take this as far less of a political stunt if Obama received it at a later date, after he actually achieved something other than good speeches.

No. Those arse-clowns in Oslo actually did give it him. For? Good intentions. Using his mouth real pretty. Being black?
Hell if I know because he has accomplished exactly squat, foreign or domestic, since becoming POTUS. Nada.
If they hadn't already awarded this prize to another zero accomplishment blowhard with a thin resume........Jimmy Carter......then I would call this an unprecedented practical joke.

White dude, stop fighting the tide of change that is Obama.
With Obama there would have been no Vietnam War and no Iraq War. Tens of thousands of American lives would have been saved.
Millions of lives around the world would be saved in the future because a black president like Obama would not allow the US to go into overseas wars like white presidents. A black president would see no reason to fight in the Middle East or the Taiwan Strait or whatever unless the US was directly attacked.
He would not have attacked Iraq which was secular and had nothing to do with 911.
He would have put 150,000 troops in Afghanistan and would have gotten bin Laden and Al Qaida instead of squandering our military in Iraq.
It is for the millions of lives worldwide that will be saved in the future that Obama got the Nobel Peace prize.

Except for the nice speeches, I haven't seen much change ...

"Small wars" are the best way to train up your military with low casualties so when a big war comes the casualty rates will be A LOT lower. I'm not advocating for war but saying preventing small wars from happening saves lives is not correct imho.

Right, losing 60,000 dead in Vietnam is a good "training."
Good training for what? A war where millions die?
Are you fooking insane?!

True, 60k is a large number. Taking the bigger picture into account, a war with the Soviet Union, 60k casualties could be a very small number. The effectiveness of the US Military after the Vietnam war was directly felt during the Panama intervention and the first Gulf War.
Now why don't we talk about the changes Obama promised.
When I was young I used to pray for a bike, then I realized that God doesn't work that way, so I stole a bike and prayed for forgiveness.

I would like to apologize on behalf of the Norwegian Nobel comite's laps of judgment in this matter, they're such a backwards country don't think to harshly of them

There is a huge number of people who never got the Nobel prize, that doesnt mean their achievements are anything short of groundbreaking, Avery, Franklin, Mendeleev and so on.

Editor's Note: Although President Obama had only been in office for 12 days before the nominations for this year's Nobel Peace prize closed the entire process actually takes a full year. According to the official Nobel Prize Web site invitation letters are sent out in September. Every year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee sends out thousands of letters inviting a qualified and select number of people to submit their nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The deadline to submit nominations is February 1. -- Two hundred five names were submitted for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, 33 of which are organizations. A short list of nominees is prepared in February and March. The short list is subject to adviser review from March until August. At the beginning of October, the Nobel Committee chooses the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates through a majority vote. The decision is final and without appeal. The names of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates are then announced."
Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize this morning. Over the last decade the only requirement to win the prize was that the nominee had to be critical of George W. Bush (see Al Gore, Mohamed El Baradei and Jimmy Carter).
President Obama has broken new ground here. Nominations for potential winners of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize ended on February 1. The president took office only 12 days earlier on January 20.
Lets take a look at the presidents first 12 days in the White House according to his public schedule to see what he did to deserve a Nobel Peace Prize:
January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.
January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information requests. Held an open house party at the White House.
January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manual techniques for interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (hows that working out?)
January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with Tim Geithner.
January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.
January 25: Skipped church.
January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary Clinton. Attended Geithner's swearing in ceremony.
January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.
January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense secretary in the afternoon.
January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning Supreme Court decision on lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.
January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.
January 31: Took the day off.
February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.
So there you have it. The short path to the Nobel Peace Prize: Party, go to meetings, skip church, release federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries, party some more.
Good grief.

Wow, Nobel Peace Prize has really touched nadir here.
It is a disappointment; In fact it almost seems like an abuse.
I always thought that that the prize to a newly elected President, who is still holding office of one of the most powerful nation and who strongly divides both domestic and international public opinion would generally be out of question as it breaks so many norms and protocols of propriety and ethics.
Irrespective of what he does in the future, he is just not deserving of this Prize at the moment. May be in 20 years or more when he has really proven himself ...
But then Nobel Peace Prize is not really known for choosing the right winners.
I think the fact that they chose Obama over a man fighting the whole CCP regime (the front runner for the prize) speaks about possible Chinese pressure or lack of courage and foresight on the part of the committee.
If all they care is glamour then they might as well move their office to Hollywood (or Bollywood as our stars are way prettier )

So the guy that nix the missle defense shield in Europe proposed by Bush and so far has created a jobless recovery only 8 months in office is deserving of this award? what a crazy world we live in.

Bush was gone one way or another... his two terms were up. And since then he has continued a lot of the same policies Bush initiated during his administration anyway...

For those who are against this decision are the ones who are stupid to put too much value on the "explosives" peace prize. This just simply shows the true value of the prize and how it works.
Congrats to those people, you learnt something new today.

This is true, because with Obama, you will be speaking Russian.
First thing he will do as Cold War President is go over to Cuba to have a chat with his "comrade" Fidel Castro, and ask him the secret of Cuba's EXCELLENTE healthcare system (that ordinary Cubans can not afford).

More importantly, the nominations were submitted in February, so apparently just being elected the president of US is enough to get nominated for nobel peace prize. I like Obama, but this win makes a mockery of nobel foundation (as has many previous winners of the peace prize).

Good on Obama. He never asked for it. Remember it is the Democrats/liberals who have won America's major wars. Whenever they have been underestimated the aggressors get their butts kicked. Just ask the Germans and Japanese.

This wasn't a vote for Obama as much as it was a political vote AGAINST Bush. Obama's repudiation-even if only rhetoric at this point-of Bush policies was why the Nobel Committee gave him the prize. It's BS because he hasn't done a god damned thing yet, but there it is. It definitely diminishes the Peace Prize credentials.
