Is periscope necessity for modern submarines?

I mean with such advance technology do nuclear powered submarines really risk to visually ID surface vessels or does it really need to do so? or is it really a must must thing? cant they operate without the use of it and stay fully submerged and hunt.

Whether a periscope is a necessity while hunting is an interesting question (the British SSN used its periscope before sinking the Belgrado) however a periscope IS indispensable for a submarine (for observing a coast or a ship or ...). Remember that a submarine has no eyes without a periscope.
