when the uss missouri pounded the iraqis in 91 she was  close to 50 years old and the iraqis couldnt tell the difference so yes age doesnt matter(even though she was modernised with ciws, slcm and electronics)

if you consider their size and ship keeping abilities, endurance, range etcthen yes .used in the right way they are still lethal.

Definitely, but they are poor weapons when compared to a ship of a different configuration but similar size such as a CVF carrier, albeit an Iowa at $125 million in 1939 would cost around $2 billion today whereas a CVF is about $3 billion, without aircraft. Two Iowas would be similar in cost ($4 billion) to a CVF + 20 or more JSF, though the carrier would destroy two Iowas with little trouble and be of more utility in general.

An Iowa could be built with 6 EM railruns firing 3000lb+ munitions and the 3rd turret replaced with a huge missile silo, the range and destructive of the EM railguns alone would be incredible. However the cost would be equally incredible, even the Zumwalt would look cheap in comparison.

I once lived in France,
but left for Angleterre,
I dream up flying in planes,
and invent some sources too,
but when it comes to proving it,
it's Tampax down the drain!

modern technology has made it possible to do the same task in smaller, cheaper, more efficient manners... ala VLS systems are more compact, have missiles with fancy technology and tracking systems, and have greater range.

Nothing beats the shock effect of a salvo of 16 inch shells, there really is no weapon in our modern arsenal capable of such pyrotechnics, but they are not needed anymore. Shells are cheaper than missiles, but running an antiquated ship is not. The upkeep required to keep those ancient parts and machinery running is expensive as well as being a headache. Also, compared to modern, automated warships, boats like the Missouri require a grossly oversized crew, (150~300 on a modern destroyer vs nearly 3000 on the Missouri) incurring almost 10 times the personnel costs of a typical warship. Is it really worth manning one vessel with a number of personnel that could fill 10 arleigh burke destroyers, just so you could park next to a beach and lob some shells? Maintaining a battleship is hideously expensive, a LOT more so than most people think, and it's simply not worth it if it's just for the sake of using its 16-inch guns, beautiful instruments of mass destruction as they may be. All the nostalgia aside, we're much better off without these relics.

with all the fancy wargear in the world military arsenal today.., battleship
seems to be un-relevant with modern warfare doctrine.., unless some navy apply
self reliance system on it then it will make up for a fight..,advance radar,
triple A's, underwater warfare counter weapon, Rail gun as its main dishes
for disaster..i think with that feature it would be a good meal on the menu..

Dear God,
I'll Fight For You,
I'll Fight Till The End...
Guide My Instinct light My Vision..,
bless this Gun to purify this world..
bless this bullet to make my enemy head a hole...
forgive me god coz i've known no patience..
as my enemy keeps growing with insulance..
mercy me for my rage...
and whisper to me for my courage...

depends on conditions, close range artillery support. or maybe with new cannons, long range support.

I don't think anyone doubts that BB's can be sunk rather easily if attacked with right kind of weapons. It's so much easier to defeat armor these days....

So weighing the costs and risks of running such a ship versus the capability it provides...is it really cost effective to run a massive floating battery? I really don't think so.

The matter is cost/benefit ratio I though, they are too big, costly to operate etc.. otherwise they can still perform some missions.

For Turks, the homeland isn't Turkey, nor yet Turkistan. Their country is a vast, eternal land: Turan!
