Why haven't they gone for jet engines on an AEW?

I once lived in France,
but left for Angleterre,
I dream up flying in planes,
and invent some sources too,
but when it comes to proving it,
it's Tampax down the drain!

Pathankot Strike
8 F-86Fs of No 19 Squadron led by Squadron Leader Sajjad Haider struck Pathankot airfield. With carefully positioned dives and selecting each individual aircraft in their protected pens for their strafing attacks, the strike elements completed a textbook operation against Pathankot. Wing Commander M G Tawab, flying one of the two Sabres as tied escorts overhead, counted 14 wrecks burning on the airfield. Among the aircraft destroyed on the ground were nearly all of the IAFs Soviet-supplied Mig-21s till then received, none of which were seen again during the War.

They might be a bit more scared if you'd used jet engines for the aircraft.

Since you bought Swedish AEW why you bought F-16c/d block 50 instead of buying Gripens?

Unification of equipment or Sweds haven't offered Gripen since they wanted to win India's fighter procurement?

Good luck getting the Americans to help fund Gripens.

Ironically if what Musharaf and all the goss on pak defence fora are to be belived..the SAAB AEW birds can only Datalink with the F-16s and none of the other planes in the paf inventory. Hence the Chinese AEW purchase.

Depends if their other aircraft have NATO compatible datalinks. I'm pretty sure the Indian SUs don't have the NATO datalinks either.

RE: how is that?.... electronics, radars, communication, datalinks, intel etc abilities is what defines the potency of a AWAC's platform... what is being jet v turboprop has got anything to do with it?

it isnt a race..

besides PAF is bring in 18 new F-16s + 44 upgraded and reskinned old f-16s, + J-10s, + 250 FC-1s + tankers + 500 aim 120 medium range missiles... to just to name afew on top of my head..

oh yes it will give IAF planners a headache to say the least

i think they got it settled already
these weren't suppose to be able to link with the older aircraft and the first batch of the Jf-17's
that wasn't much of a concern for the Gripen/Rafael purchase and 2nd batch of JF-17's would solve it out but since that purchase couldn't happen after the devastation of the earthquake and strain it put on the economy and PAF had to go for a F-16 C/D and J-10 purchase

but after that all efforts were made to make sure that these AEW aircraft will be able to link with all jets in PAF's inventory after 2012, it was the issue discussed in one of the local defense magazines and i will try to find and upload an image
the Chinese purchase was only to help grow our own understanding of AEW and move towards a future joint venture

When they signed the AEW deal they already made plans to solve the data-link issues no so worry.

Well there were technical considerations/hot and humid climate why PAF went for a turbo-prop in the form of the Saab-2000 over the ERJ-145 that would have arrived even earlier as it is already integrated with Eriye.

Firstly this has 1 extra hour of endurance over the jet ERJ-145. The saab-2000 is a fairly new design and it is one of the fastest turbo-props ever developed combining near jet speeds with the economy of a turbo-prop. Also $500 per hour cost compared to 2-3k of other larger platforms.

The Saab-2000 was the first civil application of the advanced Allison (now Rolls-Royce) AE-2100 turboshaft (derived from the military T406 developed for the revolutionary V-22 Osprey tiltrotor), driving slow turning six blade props. Also they selected a bigger plane then say Greece... to have more then 2 operators. Saab packed an extra fuel tank at the rear section of the PAF aircrafts cabin.... so even more ENDURANCE....the Saab 2000 platform can operate at a maximum range exceeding 2000 nautical miles, on a mission endurance exceeding 9.5 hours

The Erieye 2000 AEW aircraft is designed as a more capable aircraft, compared to past generation Erieye. The improved radar can detect smaller targets, including hovering helicopters, cruise missiles and low-RCS targets. Saab-2000 AEW&C uses new-generation radar transmit/receive modules with 60% higher output allowing Saab-2000 AEW&C to have increased the AEW range of over basic Erieye design allowing for detection beyond 400km in a cluttered battle enviroment

Hasnt Pakistan (navy?) also ordered P-3's with the Hawkeye-2000 system and hence their orion order was so expensive ???
