serious seperatist threat is only in the state of Jammu  and kashmir.. and somewhat in northeast india .

maoists r active in ruaral india thanks to the passive support of politicians .. their is nothing revolutionary about them .. just a bunch of highly organized gangs who takes protection money form local industrialists. however their threat is pretty serious becuse rural police is no match for them in ammo as well as motivation and also because of somewhat local support . however a major operation will be launched soon against them .. lets see what will be its outcome.

bihar

maharastra

Andhra Pradesh

west bengal .

 

Maoist insurgency also known as Naxal Bari( a village in WB) movement started in mid e 60s .. in the era of revolutions all over the world . it was started by a group of young intellectuals (???) frustrated with slow working government and inspired by communist revolutions all over the world. Soon it grow into a poular movement against corruption and other ils of gov. But emboldened by early popularity the leader of the movement did a grave blunder  of chosing the path of extreme violance. scores of common people as well as low ranking police personnel were killed in the name of class war. State retalation was swift and brutal , also the land develoement and focus on rural areas broke the ideological back of the movemnet specially in WB AND bihar (place of origin) .

by 80s movement was almost dead. however vested interest of politicians revived it in 90s. in begining it was a tool in the hand of politicians but soon grow into a menace,

and yes they r highly organized and bound by an ideology however screwed it is.

in my honest opinion

I think the most serious threat the indian have always faced and will continue facing is their politicians

the term politics has a very bad, dark and dirty definition in india
