Ok, Im sure we've all seen futuristic visions like battle mechs towering over battlefield, laser weapons, railguns, active camouflage, individual power armor and such.
I'd like to discuss thier worth on the battlefield.
As for mecha stuff, it is 100 percent useless if u consider warfare. Fragile, easy to spot, with insufficient cargo capacity. All the weapons that could be mounted on mech, can be mounted on Humvee for fraction of price.
Laser weapons are cool. But thats about it. Energy needed to power up a military grade laser would require insanely large power supply units. Project of ballistic missile interception with laser mouted on large airplane was recently cancelled, with many billions of dollars spent on useless technology, that is fragile and very sensitive to weather conditions being only marginally more effective than missile based systems.
Railguns have the same problem as laser weaponary - huge power consumption. But railguns do have some sort of future as main weapon for warships - providing range and penetration that neither present day guns, or lasers ever could.
Active camouflage is actually a very difficult thing to make. Theres been no real succes in this field, so lets just ignore it...
Power armor... isn't a thing well see anytime soon. And even then, it will be only in very limited use, as costs of making one would equal to cost of a battle tank. And no matter what materials are used, its protection will be still limited to small arms.
Ok, if you got any futher ideas or you wish to comment then go ahead :D
"Peace is a precious and a desirable thing. Our generation, bloodied in wars, certainly deserves peace. But peace, like almost all things of this world, has its price, a high but a measurable one. We in Poland do not know the concept of peace at any price. There is only one thing in the lives of men, nations and countries that is without price. That thing is honor." - Józef Beck on the outbreak of WW2
