Chinese hack JSF secrets

On the front page of today's Sunday Times, can't provide the entire article as i don't subscribe to the online version but theres a summary of the article from another site below. Basically the article says BAE were hacked and it may present a big threat to the aircraft's defences and radar capability and this hack along with another on Lockheed Martin in 2009 may be responsible for some of the delays and cost over runs on the F-35....

http://www.terminalx.org/2012/03/security-experts-say-china-hacked.html

"The Sunday Times

Chinese spies hacked into computers belonging to BAE Systems, Britain's biggest defence company, to steal details about the design, performance and electronic systems of the West's latest fighter jet, senior security figures have disclosed.

The Chinese exploited vulnerabilities in BAE's computer defences to steal vast amounts of data on the $300 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a multinational project to create a plane that will give the West air supremacy for years to come, according to the sources.

The hacking attack has prompted fears that the fighter jet's advanced radar capabilities could have been compromised.

Details of the attack on BAE have been a closely guarded secret within Britain's intelligence community since it was first uncovered nearly three years ago. But they were disclosed by a senior BAE executive during a private dinner in London for cyber security experts late last year.

One of those present said: "The BAE man said that for 18 months, Chinese cyber attacks had taken place against BAE and had managed to get hold of plans of one of its latest fighters."

BAE said: "We don't comment on allegations of cyber attacks against the company. BAE Systems' own cyber security capability can detect, prevent and rectify such attacks."

A former US official, speaking last week on condition of anonymity, said the BAE Systems element of the JSF program had "almost certainly" been penetrated.

However, he cautioned: "There are lots of aspects of weapons development. At least some aspects of it (the F-35 project) were targeted successfully by the Chinese. They didn't steal everything that was on that airplane, just some aspects."

The Chinese embassy in London described the claims as a "baseless allegation".

It said China condemned all forms of online crime.

Suspicions that the Joint Strike Fighter had been targeted by Chinese hackers first emerged in the US media in 2009."

Both fights were a standard set-up and merge at 21,000ft and 30,000ft he recounted, adding that the higher the fight the better the Eurofighter liked it. I believe this is part of Operation 'Shady RAT' which was a pretty well documented case of likely Chinese state sponsored cyber espionage.

Reading that document, while I've very little knowledge of the subject I don't think you could deny the Chinese state was behind the attacks mentioned. Maybe that link should also be posted in the NATO commander/Facebook thread....

"I don't think you could deny the Chinese state was behind the attacks mentioned."

Oh I am sure we could find some here on WAFF that would say it all just baseless Western propaganda and that the only actual truth on the Internet can be found at a single URL...

http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/

...there everything you need to think and believe in one handy spot, absolutely no point in reading multiple sources and arriving at your own conclusions, that would be far too "unharmonious"! wink.gif

" Maybe that link should also be posted in the NATO commander/Facebook thread...."

Why waste the effort trying to educate blind and predictable sheeple?

Guess the Russians are working for the CIA too...

...listen I appreciate that you two (Hawksss and nb13) are paid mouthpieces for the Chinese Communist party, that's fine, I just want to know how much you two are receiving for selling out your own people?

By the way Hawksss, I like how you went from "there is no way that China did this" to "well the CIA spies too"...by the way what sort of industrial espionage do you believe the West engages in against China? After all 99.99% of China's engineers greatest skill is mastering the various nuances of the Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V keyboard commands...

Huawei admits copying Cisco code

...perhaps if China didn't send all their most creative thinkers off for reeducation (i.e. Chinese slave labor camps) they might be able to come up with something original beyond a new way to wok fry a dog.

(Oh and by the way, since neither nb13 of Hawksss actually live in China (and likely have never set foot in China) I suppose calling them Chinese is like calling me Scottish).

------

Military reconnaissance and theft of secrets/intellectual property are different activities though. I'd say spying is a closer analogy to this type of hacking.

Perhaps both sides do engage in spying/hacking but the evidence presented in the report posted by Coalde above does point to the Chinese being more heavily involved than the US/West. Perhaps this can be explained by a bias on our part or just the west being better at getting away with it and there is some justification for hacking of military secrets as they could foreseeably be a threat to Chinese national security but some of the other hacks are just downright theft. If China wants to take its place as a fair and respected competitor then this sort of behaviour has to be seen as unacceptable. I'm sure its happened here too but I'd have the same attitude towards those doing it. Whats more individuals/companies stealing secrets off each other in this manner would be prosecuted.
