Chinese quantum satellite sends 'unbreakable' code

China has sent an "unbreakable" code from a satellite to the Earth, marking the first time space-to-ground quantum key distribution technology has been realized, state media said on Thursday.

China launched the world's first quantum satellite last August, to help establish "hack proof" communications, a development the Pentagon has called a "notable advance".

The official Xinhua news agency said the latest experiment was published in the journal Nature on Thursday, where reviewers called it a "milestone".

The satellite sent quantum keys to ground stations in China between 645 km (400 miles) and 1,200 km (745 miles) away at a transmission rate up to 20 orders of magnitude more efficient than an optical fiber, Xinhua cited Pan Jianwei, lead scientist on the experiment from the state-run Chinese Academy of Sciences, as saying.

"That, for instance, can meet the demand of making an absolute safe phone call or transmitting a large amount of bank data," Pan said.

Any attempt to eavesdrop on the quantum channel would introduce detectable disturbances to the system, Pan said.

"Once intercepted or measured, the quantum state of the key will change, and the information being intercepted will self-destruct," Xinhua said.

The news agency said there were "enormous prospects" for applying this new generation of communications in defense and finance.

China still lags behind the United States and Russia in space technology, although President Xi
Jinping has prioritized advancing its space program, citing national security and defense.

China insists its space program is for peaceful purposes, but the U.S. Defense Department has highlighted its increasing space capabilities, saying it was pursuing activities aimed at preventing adversaries from using space-based assets in a crisis.

China uses Micius to explore the basic science necessary to build the “quantum internet” — a hyper-secure, superfast network, operating with the aid of the spookiest quantum mechanics, that could one day supplant or augment our current world wide web.

That will endlessly piss off the hackers.

Communication not Encryption

There seems to be a misunderstanding of quantum communications.
It is not an encryption methodology but a way to determine if someone
is monitoring or copying the data being transmitted.

Depending on the implementation of the data recovery probabilities
on the sending and receiving side, data might be corrupted on the
on the transmission side or reception side, so you face a possible
information stoppage at the worst case, or an information slowdown
on the best case.

This means your system must have redundancy built into it so that
it continues to function at optimum efficiency.

Also, since the entanglement is done at site, please note that the
system doing the entanglement is not quantum in nature. Only
the signal is. Thus you still need to make sure your system is
not eavesdropped on. (Thus if you are doing entangling at the
satellite, you need to make sure the system doing it is not
eavesdropped on.)

Also, please note that the quantum communications is only good during
the communications portion of the information chain. If the system
where the data belongs to is compromised, no amount of quantum
communications will save it from exposure.

I am very happy that China is willing to spur progress in Quantum Physics.
The developments here will hopefully spawn a new rise in quantum based
technologies that will benefit the world in the future.

It's about the major key part is secured with quantum tech.

Understood, but the key itself is data

"It's about the major key part is secured with quantum tech."

Understood. Please note that the decryption keys are data themselves. So if the quantum communication
is being monitored, the quantum communications will make the "key" become useless and the data sent through
normal means self destruct". (Not sure what self destruct means in the article, but the reporter may have
been talking about the quantum state and not the actual data.)

Thus you would need to repeat the process until you get one to go through.

Of course there will be redundancies so that the data will flow through the quantum communication,
but the destruction of the keys highlights a solvable issue with Quantum communications.

Of course, as stated before, since the data is sent through normal means, eavesdropping on that part
is not covered.

Also, please note, the decryption keys themselves are not quantum based since they will be
needed to run in a normal machine. (Well to be strictly fair, you can do encryption
using a Qbit based system, but that is another topic altogether)

The good news is that this QKD system is now implemented for real when it was just a
project a few years back. Great Progress!

-----------

That's what they're doing with their military equipment especially navy. They build new series of warships every year until they come up with something LESS OBSOLETE!

good for china and thank you for making your progress in this area so public. all advancements in this field are kept secret from us by our government so we dont have much to add other than weve been advancing in this field for a few decades now.

it's likely bull sht since the need for the ccp to let everyone know they have this capability.

only time we brag about our tech is when it becomes unclassified and you see it flying or fielded.

sometimes u.s likes to start a conversation about what they might have when they fly on a clear and
sunny day over texas for everyone to see.... at least to see its contrails.

If US really had some "magic" flying weapon they won't have built F-22 and the ugly pig F-35

You're really lacking IQ. That's the reason the F-22 stood at ONLY 170+ planes and no more are needed and the black projects are usually something that flies!
