Seems like the students would get more training working with the Italian. And I wouldn't want to sing some of those fast ensembles on English syllables...
And young students may not have the italian skills yet; that's a lot of italian! Frankly I think audiences connect more when things are sung in english, as strange as it can be for those of us used to the other language.
This program sounds great!

It's a lot of Italian not just to say but to know what everyone else is saying at every moment for the entire opera. I hate to say this, but that is rarely the case.
Maybe at the next level doing it in Italian would be a good idea but for this program I think they are better off doing it in Italian (and I suspect their audience will enjoy it more in English as well).

I'm a fan of comic opera in English, especially in an intimate setting as this will be. Secondly, there will be no supertitles. This is a workshop production and it's low-budget. Third, Schicchi is pretty challenging musically and I want the singers to be able to concentrate on their singing and acting skills.
We will also be doing scenes as well as an art song program in original languages, so singers will get a chance to work on their language skills as well.

We are still accepting applications and are especially interested in hearing from men, baritones and bass-baritones in particular. However, all voice types are welcome!

do you offer scholarships? i was offered a contract at wolf trap this summer and accepted it but a family emergency has forced me to retract my agreement and live at home (in Austin). I would audition if i knew there was a possibility I wouldn't have to pay to sing
