I'm attending the "Summer Institute of Art Song in Spanish" at TCU July 25-Aug. 1 and I have a couple of nights and other pockets of the day free. I'm meeting an old friend who's coming over from Dallas one night and would love to know of any good restaurants near the university. Also, is there a place within walking distance of the music school where I could get me my daily fix of the sacred bean?
I'm flying in on the afternoon of Sat. the 25th and renting a car, so I'm mobile while I'm there.
Thanks!
The Rabble

I am going to the workshop as well and I love coffee. I would also love to know some great places. I will be staying in walking distance to TCU. Can't wait!! I am not from there and have very few recc's for now but I wanted to tell you that I am going as well.
Feel free to look me up. I'll probably be the only 6'3" bald tenor there!
Do you need a ride from the airport?

Hi there! How do I look you up? You mean on Facebook or something before we arrive? Maybe we already know each other?? hmmm...so, I am flying in on July 24th which is a Thursday and out on Monday, August 3rd. That is so nice of you to offer a ride to the airport! Very cool. Do our dates line up at all? I am getting really excited for this workshop.
I am arriving on the 25th and leave on the 2nd, so no luck there.

There is an "Einstein Bros" bagels on University, within walking distance of the opera building. As a transplanted Yankee, I can tell you that they are about as good as bagels get in Texas, and the coffee isn't bad, either.
I'm not a coffee drinker, but there is an Einstein Bagel on the south side of campus, and there might be small coffee bar across the street from that. Come to think of it, there is a Starbucks in the TCU Bookstore/Barnes & Noble. These are all a very easy walk from the music building. There is also B&N with a Starbucks a mile or so north of the campus, straight up University.
As far as places to eat, a couple of places around campus (you should be able to find all of these on Google for more info):
Dutch's -- great hamburgers, south side of campus, across form the bagel place
Fuzzy's Tacos -- inexpensive, also south side of campus (caveat-I haven't eaten here yet, but I've only heard great things about it)
A little farther away (about a mile or so, not walkable but easy to make for a lunch break)
Blue Mesa -- about a mile north on University, check out their happy out with free quesadillas
Mellow Mushroom -- pizza place not quite a mile south on University, I haven't been there but it looks very fun
Other places, about 10 min or so from campus, probably better for dinner:
Gloria's -- Tex-Mex/Guatamalan, very good, and they have a salsa band and dancing on the weekend
Sundance Square downtown -- plenty of places to eat, plus shopping/bars/etc, check out Mi Cocina and Taverna
Joe T. Garcia's -- some of the best simple Mexican food, with kick-ass margaritas, on the north side of town, near the Historic Stockyard's area. If you have an afternoon or early evening free, I'd definitely recommend heading up to the Stockyard's and walking around a bit (it's touristy but cute), then eating at Joe T's or one of the great steak places (H3 is right in the Stockyards).
All of these are pretty reasonable, but there are some more upscale places around if you wanted a night out -- Eddy V's (seafood, steak) and Lonesome Dove (game, high-end cowboy cooking) are great.
That should give you some options, but feel free to email me if you have any questions.

I second Blue Mesa, and Gloria's, a must if you have a car...

also another is Central Market, about a five minute drive from the campus. Its a very large gourmet grocery store, similar to Whole Foods but nicer, that many of the students eat at because its a good variety and is cheap alternative to going out to eat, it also has a nice outdoor sitting area where they have small concerts at night. Not sure but does Blue Mesa still have a happy hour special? If they do, definitely check that out. These are all about 5 minute or less drive from TCU.
That is definitely a good choice for lunch -- prepared foods and a salad bar, pretty reasonably well priced. It's kinda hot here now, so I don't know if they are still doing it, but they frequently have cookouts on Friday with live music.
And yes, Blue Mesa does still have happy hour M-F with free quesadillas. So for hte price a drink or two, you can pretty much have a free dinner.
Always good to have suggestions from locals. I've never been to Ft. Worth, so this gives me some great ideas.
