Mark;

Thanks for the kind words.

To be honest I don't know much about the 220. Apparently only one was ever built, probably McD looking at the biz-jet market or maybe even doing tests for the DC-9 design?? Anyway, it remains complete at El Paso as can be seen in my not to good photo. However I think it's towed around from time to time.

This airplane sure looks like a converted CV240.

Certainly the Vertical Stab looks as if it is straight off a Convair Twin.

Can anyone shed more light on it?

I went to Google and typed in Mcdonnell Douglas 220.

I got the following website in response.

Interesting!

Douglas 220 in videotape

November 5 2002, 11:46 AM

quoted from sellers website: http://www.thconline.com/loceldougdc6.html

Here is an excellent video tape containing a collection of fantastic footage of the Lockheed Electra, a United Airlines DC-6, and a unique glimpse at a McDonnell 220 Executive Jet. The final section of this great airliner videotape is a brief promotional film of a very unusual four-engine executive jetliner, the McDonnell 220. Apparently none of the airlines went for this plane and only one was ever built. Great air to air footage and a detailed tour of both the interior and exterior of this one of a kind aircraft! This is a must have for any Electra or DC-6 enthusiast

I saw a photograph of this aircraft a number of years ago. I think it was constructed probably prior to the McDonnell/Douglas merger. Possibly a last ditch effort to get a product in the works....but didn't
prior to the partnership.

Correct, the Douglas company had nothing to do with this design. It was a competitor for the USAF light jet transport requirement, which was won by the Lockheed Jetstar.
The one at ELP is airworthy and for sale if you have $700k lying around
Discussed on PPRuNe a while back: http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=67275

Just what is the identity of the airplane in Nicholas's photo?

Anyone have any info on its History?

Hi

The Convair pictured is N640CM CV640 belonging to C&M airways. This Convairliner has a long service history originaly being delivered to KLM as a CV-340 back in September 1953. For more photos of the C&M Convair fleet, please see http://www.musante.dk/tour0202/

Thanks

Nicolai,

I just visited you site covering the U.S. and Canada.
All aircraft very interesting especially the Mars boat.
Good to see that again. It appears to be undergoing maintenance which I am sure is an ongoing thing.

The Canadian produced fire bomber appears to be much larger than I thought. The name of the manufacturer and aircraft has slipped my mind.

Best,Doug

CL-215

Hi Doug

The Canadian build firebomber is known as the CL-215 (piston) and the newer version, the CL-415 (turbine).
