The glorious sounds of the big props

For everybody who wants to listen to the sounds of oldies, visit

http://www.aero-dynamicrecordings.com

There are more than 7 cd's now, and the're really great. The one with the Connie-sounds is very realistic. My cat became almost crazy and wild when I put the volume-button a little bit to high.

Listen to the fantastic start up and fly-by's. Nico van der Linden, a Dutchman with great knowledge of prop-sounds, made some of these sound-cd's. Have a look at his site.

These cd's are not available in the AHM-shop. They should be there!!!

By the way, I don't have any financial advantage by sending this message. I just hope Nico's (small) business will succeed. Don't hesitate, order now! There's a special offer on his site now!

best

The glorious sound of the big props

I can second all this.

I have most of Nico's CDs and they are fantastic, especially the Connie one, which includes some recordings made in the 1950s and the difference in sound/power compared with the recordings (on the same CD) of Connies flying today on 100LL, as opposed to the 1950s higher octane fuel is very noticeable.

startup sounds

In memory I've heard enough radial startups that its not too much of a novelty but does anyone sell a recording of a Napier Sabre startup and runup? I've heard that it was distinctly different from anything else.

British Engine sounds?

January 7 2003, 1:29 AM

Does anyone know of a site having audio clips of any of the British engines - Hercules/Centaurus/Merlin/Griffon etc? British radials always sounded so different to the US P&Ws and Wrights for some reason.
I never heard a Napier Sabre running, the Hawker Typhoons being a little before my time, but I recall 'old hands' during my RAF time in the 50s/60s telling me of them and their complexity, and particularly their unique sound.

Napier Sabre/Hawker Tempest sounds!!

January 28 2003, 11:14 PM

Lee.....

There's a webpage called "The Hawker Tempest Page" at http://user.trinet.se/~ytm843e/tempest.htm on it you will find lots of Tempest/Napier Sabre info. In the nav-bar is a section called 'Downloads', click on that and then select 'Sounds'. There you will find your Napier Sabre sounds - start, taxi, take-off and flyby.
And yes...it's different!

Regards, Colin.

Napier Sabre

Colin/Lee,

Indeed the Sabre was a complex engine, with its sleeve valves and Kaufmann Starter. (I think thats how its spelt. Apologies if I've got it wrong)

I do not pretend to know much about this engine, like Colin, it was before my time, but it was a beast.

As far as I know, no running examples are in existance now.

Thank goodness someone had the foresight to capture the sound for all to hear.

Sabre recording

hello David......
I believe that recording of the Tempest with it's Napier Sabre was made in or about 1944, which makes it's sound quality quite remarkable.
As Lee said in his first mention of the engine, it has a peculiar sound all of it's own - but what 'music' it makes during that full power takeoff run!
Unfortunately, it was only ever fitted in Hawker Typhoon and Tempests, so the 'symphony' of 4 of them on the same airframe has never been heard. Colin.
