Once again, this discussion page was down for several days and the hosting site was at fault. I have had it with them! This ongoing problem has made me decide to take this site to the next level and I'll be moving it to a more powerful and stable UNIX server. I will also be switching to what I feel is the best discussion page software out there called "Infopop UBB". This is an expensive piece of software but it's the industry standard that most of the larger web sites use. The old discussion page will remain for a while and hopefully I can archive the treads.
My goal for this year is to turn Propliners.com into one of the premier websites out there focusing on classic airliners. I will soon begin running this as a commercial website instead of the way it's been run by me in past. Take a look at all the people who take part in the discussions on this site. You can find their names as authors of magazine articles, aviation books, and even in the credits of many television shows that you see on the Discovery Wings Channel. I feel this site has enough clout to rise to the next level, attract a few advertisers, and become THE place to go to discuss classic airliners. I will be coming up with a sort of business plan for the site soon. I don't have any expectation of this being a profit making site for me but do hope it will become self supporting.
I know I asked this a while back and got a lot of responses, but I'd like to hear from all of you once again about what features you'd like to see on the new Propliners.com. The discussion page will still be one of the main attractions for the site. A few things that I want to add is a photo gallery, a classic aircraft encyclopedia, a streaming video and sound gallery, and feature articles. So, let's hear what all of you would like to see!
Regards,

NOTE: Propliners.com may be down at times while I move to the new server. The discussion page should still be available during the move so you may want to note the URL.

Be careful that you don't end up just doubling up with what is offered on the excellent Airliners website photo gallery.
Yours will have to be better in that department anyway, to work the way you envision.
Otherwise it sounds an excellent idea and I for one look forward to seeing the end result.
Go For It!
February 7 2003, 11:58 PM
Go for it Greg....but don't cabon copy those sites who have already done a very good job at photos and such. If you know of a better way of displaying photos and other features then do it...but don't try to re-invent what has already been done.
Best of luck,
Doug Vernon

New propliners.com site

Hear hear Greg!
I will support you in whatever you do with the site. My suggestion was a gallery of photos from participants on the site and you are proceeding with that idea.
As David Wood says however, be careful to differentiate the site from airliners.net-the discussion page is, in my view, the best way of achieving that.
money?

Is this going to become a pay per view site?

Hi Lee,
No, this won't ever become a pay per view site or anything that requires a membership. By "commercial", I just meant that I would need to sell advertisements (not those annoying pop-up ads though) or other items to help offset the costs. I'm going to start treating the site like a regular commercial site in order to attract more visitors and add content.

Streaming Video and Audio
February 10 2003, 11:33 AM
Greg,
Two of your ideas in particular draw my attention...and facination. They are streaming video and aircraft audio. However, as you know from past remarks from me, I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to bring up the video news from AHM. I have been unsuccessful in bringing anything up anything concerning video from the museum but I have been able to see and hear material from other venues such as the
Dutch Museum, venues from Japan offering the most beautiful and realistic digital aviation animation I have ever seen. I applaud your idea of video and audio transmission....but I just want to be sure that we will all be able to receive it. We do have a firewall system here at the museum. However I can still pick up pretty much everything out there from the standpoint of audio and video. I suggest a careful study be made in regards to this subject.

Greg,
Propliners are my love in aviation, with large warbirds running a close second (there is a fine over-lap in both camps).
Through my inerests in Propliners I have been privileged to meet and become acquainted with many owners and pilots of these wonderful aeroplanes. Without fail, all were extremely helpful, generous to a fault and some have since become very close friends. Though not a pilot myself, I have, again, been privileged to participate and enjoy in the operation of a number of Propliners whilst in the pursuit of my photography and writing.
Since discovering this discussion group, I am always pleasantly surprised at the depth of question and responses given, this is really a great font of knowledge.
Greg, I applaud your efforts and look forward to the 'new and improved' (to coin an old corny TV phrase !) Propliners.com.
Best wishes
David Wood
New Site
February 11 2003, 1:49 AM
Ditto from me Greg.
Through your site I have met some great people who are now good friends, even though we have never met personally.
I look forward to my daily "fix" of propliners and make a point of checking in 1st thing after checking e-mail. I always read the new addisitons, but don't always add comments.
So all us "old regulars." Doug, Lee, Herb, Michael, Nicolai, Frank, myself and others who I have not mentioned, will be there when the new site starts.

Hi Greg
I'm pretty new in this discussion forum. But I want to say that this site is great! The first thing I do, before I check the e-mails, is visiting the discussion page. On this site are many many interesting news of the propliner scene.
My best wishes and I'll be also there when the new site starts.
Richard
Thanks!

Thanks for all of the responses so far! I'll be sure to take them all into consideration. Keep the suggestions coming!
Greg
BTW: Watch for the new discussion page within the next week! I'll still keep this one going for a while.
great website

Greg, this is also a new found treasure site for me. My morning ritual is to go to ntsb accidents reports. Beech 18.com and .net sites Beech 18.net discussion sites get pretty heated up at times as differences of opinions erupt concerning pilot technique etc. Most of the readers are 18 pilots or prospective buyers and many are owners or past owners. I have tried to learn by others mistakes as these airplanes are getting expensive, although pound for pound, still less than pipers or cessnas! I used to be a fairly well paid honda car mechanic until I broke my back in 3 places. Now I am an 8 dollar an hr security officer and unlicenced airplane mechanic and I can still afford to own my 18! Keep it going greg. Good Job
