Connie 3 view plans

February 7 2003, 3:48 PM

Pauline,

One of the best places to start looking is in the R/C model airplane world.

Such 3 views are available through various businesses that specialise in scale plans for modellers.

Try purchasing copies of the 2 main US monthly R/C airplane magazines "RCM" (Radio Controlled Modeller) and "Model Airplane News"

You will find advertisments in both these publications, for suppliers of scale 3 views.

I know plans for L049-C69 and L749A Connies are available, having seen them advertised in the past.

Be warned though, that completed models from these plans have wingspans in the area of 100 inches.

If you want something a lot smaller, then go for a plastic kit.

The "Heller" 1/72 scale L749A Connie, available through most good Hobby stores and maybe even through the Airline History Museum in Kansas City, is not a bad kit.

Plans

Hello

Some years ago I had a Heller Super Connie. But the drawings ob this kit are not very detailed. I have a plan for a Connie/Super Connie with a wingspan of 3400mm. The plan is from Don Smith. I also plan to build a model. But one of a Super Connie with a wingspan abou 3m.

There are also some good drawings in Connie books. I have some of them. Sould I scan them and send them to you, Pauline?

Best greetings

Richard

If you purchase any scale 3 view of a Connie of any varient, check it out for accuracy before attempting construction.

A good friend purchased a R/C Model plan, from a supposedly reputable source, of a WV2 and commenced to build it.

After the fuselage was 3/4 completed, it was discovered that all the plan maker had done was stretch a C69 and fit it with the humps and bumps of a WV2.

Not even the raised cockpit roof line or the windshield angle or pane numbers of the L1049 series airplanes had been incorporated, nor the weather radar nose.

Result is that the front section of the fuselage has to be remade, from home draw plans incorporating the relevent changes.

Further studies showed that the changed outer fin shape, incorporating the raised height of the latter in the 1049 series, over that found in the C-69, L049-649-749's had also not been incorporated in the plans.

My friend had to go and find and build a plastic model kit to study the neccesary changes.

He was lucky, he found a rare (now) 1/72 Heller WV2 kit and used that.

The Heller Super Connie kit(WV2 and /or L1049G)has a very accurate fuselage and tail profile, but is lacking accuracy in the engine cowling, propellor and nose wheel and nose wheel undercarriage leg department.

The Heller 1/72 L749(also sold as a C121) is both accurate and lacking, in the same areas as its L1049 kit brother.

Heller also released this kit as a Panam L049. The engine cowling shape on the 1st release of this particular kit was closer to those of a L749A, so also take care if you go "plastic."

Good luck
