The ogre, the troll, or the creepy, crusty "mudwoman" (whatever you call it) depicts above all, Diane's misery and decay. It's not a coincidence that this character is behind a wall, hidden from everyone's view. Diane's dream, as she wants to be an actress, is to be loved by everyone, to be in everybody's mind. At the end, we see Dan (the man who tells us his nightmare at the beginning of the movie, let's say a common guy) looking almost disgusted, or at least restless at Diane. Diane's dreams of being a star clearly collapse, she will never become a dream to others, but a nightmare, as her life is a failure. Have you noticed that the troll has clear blue eyes, such as Diane?
