I saw the movie last night for the 3rd time, and I came up with some new issues. This is so amazing, each time I see this movie I discover so many things. There are so many layers of facts and clues in this movie, and each time I'm thrilled again.
First of all, there is vast usage of the number 16 in the movie. Adam's room number is 16. The song Camilla Rhodes in the dream sings is "16 things I love about you". And, when betty and Camilla are going to find Diane Celwyn, betty is looking for the house and says, "2-5-9-0, that's it"... Add these numbers and what you get? exactly.
Also, I noticed there is a massive usage of the colors blue and pink, especially in the supposedly dream part. Also about this matter, all the movie we see a big sign says winkies, but there is one time where we see that big sign saying "pink's". This is at the beginning of the scene where the hitman is walking with this hooker (a scene which btw I did not completely understand).
Also about winkies. When betty and Camilla are going to call the police, the camera focuses (really focuses) on a white flower within the winkies. I think that in the rest of the scenes the flower is not there but I'm not sure.
About the silencio. Before they enter the club, it looks like someone is stalking/following them. Also, there is a blue cloud in the show, that makes betty shake. At the end of the movie there is a jump back to this blue cloud. What is going on therE?@!
Bob brooker is the same director that in reality chose Camilla for a big part, and in diane's dream was auditioning her. Also, if you try to put Camilla instead of the male actor, the dialogue makes a bit of sense.
Now, this time when I got to the supposedly reality part, it didn't look real at all. Even in that part, everything is so slow, the are many fades and blurs, the kiss between real Camilla, and the Camilla in the dream still remains a mystery to me. Maybe this is how diane remembers the real party, I dont know.
Also, before the cowboy wakes up diane, after Camilla was sucked into the blue box, the box falls on the floor and then betty's aunt, which supposed to be dead, walks in the room and sees nothing. Weird.
Notice that the hitmal also has blue eyes.
Finally, in the end of the movie, after diane shoots herself we see a lot of smoke. When it disappears we see the monster. (AHH, SO SCARY@$^@^$). Why do we see Camilla with the blonde wig after that?@#
Think about it, and I'll get back here the 4th time I watch it.

The first thing I noticed during the jitterbug scene was that there was a dominance of not two but three colours: the blue, the pink and a mustard/yellow colour. I mentioned this immediately to my partner (also a designer) and we followed the use of these colours throughout the rest of the film. You will notice that Aunt Ruth's apartment is mustard coloured, and the film has been graded so that all the faces are a mustard yellow with pink cheeks.

I agree with the theory that she relives her life/fantasizes in the split second before she dies, from shooting herself.
The blue smoke is what it all comes back to and ends with, I think it is the smoke from the gun, the last thing a person that shoots himself will see, that's why she is shaking in the theatre, she is dying at that moment, and that is why the monster appears when the smoke is gone, because she is dead then, the monster representing death/devil/hell.

The point about the numbers is a great point. I thought that since Diane's apartment number was 17 that was reflective of the fact that she just did not seem to fit in, or she was "one" off.
Notice also that when Betty puts the robe on top of Camilla she takes a note off of it that says "Enjoy yourself Bitsie." Pretty strange. I guess it is the nickname Aunt Ruth had used for her.
I am bothered though by the party. I just don't think that was "reality." Something was amiss.

i have noticed another reoccuring theme in the film, Telephones. in the winkies scene with the two guys the camera focuses on the phone outside. then betty and rita use it when calling the police.
Also when kescher(sp?) uses the phone and presses 0 then hangs up twice and then presses 4 or 5. i didn't see the relevance of that if there is any. there are also several repeating scenes involving telephones.
the official site has a load of phone references such as the main page is called the switchboard and also the completely confusing telephone section.
there is one other part of the film i didn't understand- the old people that arrive with betty at the start and then drive diane to suicide at the end. oh, i've just realised they probably represent death, does anyone else have theories on them?

the first time the old people appear is before the opening credits, at the end of the jitterbug contest scene. They are laughing with Diane, and acting as if someone is taking photographs of them. They are on Diane's good side when everything is going well, and her nightmare when things are going wrong. In my opinion, they represent her success, happiness, or lack thereof. It is what ultimately drove Diane mad, that she coudn't be something she wanted to be so much.
