OK, Ive always loved David Lynch films and so on, ever since I watched Twin peaks. I find his films so interesting, and the atmosphere he can create is amazing. Ive always loved being scared, and his films are some of the scariest and tense, even though he doesnt stick to the classic rules of horror films.
Anyway, I watched Mulholland drive for the fist time the other night, and was not disapointed. However it is definetely one of the hardest Lynch films to get your head around IMO. I knew this was the case before I watched it, and when I saw it was on the TV I remembered Id seen a thing posted on another message board and searched it out. It is from the DVD of the film as far as I know, and it is titled 10 clues to help. I tried to follow them throughout the movie, but really I cant understand what its getting at. I have read a few explanations on here and other places, and they are all very interesting, but I cant connect some of these clues to working out what the explanation is (however unclearcut and open to interpretaion it may be). I believe personally the theeory that the first part of the film was a dream, although other theories cant be disregarded.
So Im going to go through the 10 clues, and tell you what I got from them, if anything, and perhaps some of the more knowledgable people on here could explain their relevance.
I may add Ive only seen the film once so far, and may have missed alot of stuff. anyway, here we go:
10 clues to help:
1. Pay particular attention in the beginning: two clues revealed before the credits.
What I noticed before the credits was as follows:
The strange dancing sequence at the start, involving Dianne and the two old people, and someone lying scared under a red duvet. There is something else important that escapes me just now im afraid (ineed to see this film again LOL).
2. Notice the appearances of the lamp shade.
I noticed this twice during the film, firstly we saw it beside a ringing phone, but we didnt know whos it was or indeed who was phoning. Next I saw it as Dianne's phone later on, and she picked it up as far as iI can remember.
3. Can you hear the title of the film Adam Kesher is auditioning for? Is it mentioned again?
I never heard the title of the film, unless that is the point perhaps, that there was no film because it was all a dream?
4. An accident is a terrible thing... notice the location of the accident.
I noticed the accident was on Mulholland drive, where it later turned out there was a shortcut to Adam Kesher's house.
5. Who gives a key, and why?
The only time I noticed a key being given was near the end. The hitman gave Dianne the key in winkies if I remember correctly?
6. Notice the robe, the ashtry, the coffee cup.
I didnt notice these things altogether, i did notice a couple of coffee cups and ahtrays throughtout the film, for example in winkies. I dont remember seeing a robe.
7. What is felt, realized and gathered at the club silencio?
I have no idea apart from when they go inside Rita's bag and find the blue box.
8. Did talent alone help Camilla?
I think her beauty helped Camilla alot in the industry.Im not sure what else.
9. Note the occurences surrounding the man behind winkies.
He was a tramp, at first he was in the mans nightmare, and scared him to death when he popped his head around the corner. He was seen again at the end, and he was holding the blue box i think. I cant remember if he went on fire or something like that.
10. Where is aunt Ruth?
At first the viewer is led to believe aunt Ruth is in Canada for something to do with a film. LAter on it seens she was infact at her house the whole time (?)
So as you can see Ive not really worked much out. What does this all mean? why are they clues and to what? (the lamp shade for example). Perhaps you could list them as I have done, with your answers and theories underneath?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
