Samsung DVD-HD1000
This high end player from Samsung not only outputs 480p, but it also does 720p and/or 1080i picture quality from ordinary DVD. All thanks to some very sophisticated processing, which I believe they technically call this much interpolating- line quadrupling. The Samsung DVD-HD1000, apparently utilzes Faroudja's/Genesis new FLI2301 chip set. Samsung calls it Pro-End DVD.
In addition to what the older FLI2200 chip uses, such as DCDi processing, and Cross-Color Suppresion. We can add to the list a, 3-D noise reduction algorithm, horizontal and vertical scaling for aspect ratio conversion(previosuly unavailable), and Faroudja's patented TrueLife(TM) video enhancement technology.
Anybody know how this upconversion is done. Will a DVD be upconverted to true HDTV?

If a signal is upconverted, it can't be high definition. True HD includes information, resolution and color depth, that just can't be included in a 480 signal. Upconverting 480 to 720p or 1080i does NOT produce a high definition picture.
Heck, my STB can upconvert SD television to 1080i - that doesn't make it high definition, and that is visually obvious.
This is NOT an HD DVD player, since HD source material does not yet exist on DVDs. If Samsung is claiming this is an HD player, they are using deceptive marketing.

Rick.. I agree with you totally... you took the words right out of my mouth...
HD DVD is still a long ways off... I can only wish it were here sooner!
Now that HDTV sets are becoming the norm sold for big screens, the media (broadcasting, dvd, etc) needs to start catching up... I don't want to watch only 3 or 4 HD channels for the next 2 years. The only utilization my HDTV is getting right now is on Progessive Scan DVD's, and that's not true HD....

It will not make NTSC DVD look like HD - impossible. It will give you the same viewing distance as HD which is a good thing and of interest to me. In the end though I don;t know if I would invest the money for this player when it will be close to a JVC D-VHS D-Theater in $$ which is real HD with 30% higher bit rate.
